89 names completed out of 263.

So far-
2 Abruzzi
1 Pugliese
5 Basilicatesi
7 Calabresi
45 Campanians
1 Emilia-Romagna
2 Lazio
1 Marche
1 Molise
36 Sicilians.

One thing I noticed is that, unlike the Gambinos who were mostly 1st or 2nd generation, the Gens are more 2, 3 or even 4th generation mainlanders, very similar to New Orleans or Kansas City in some cases except the latter Families are more Sicilian-centric.

Gerardo Catena
1/2/1902 Newark, NJ
21 Overhill Road, South Orange, NJ
Francesco Catena Romagnano al Monte, Salerno, Campania
Donata Speziale
Catherine McNelly
Interests in People's Express Co., Advance, Vending Co., Runyan Vending Sales, Co., Kool-Vent Awning Co.
FBI # 144036; Newark PD # 9636

Donata Speziale/Speziole was born in Newark in 1883 to Francesco Speziale/Speziole and Santa Malepede. They were both born in the 1850's and arrived in early 1880 to Newark. Birthplace: "Italy." I've encountered this more with this family than any other ones. It's all mainlanders. While some Sicilians like the Corrao's were here early (Joe Butch was 4th generation American from Sciacca and Gotti considered him too Sicilian), the majority are these mainland guys in NJ, NY and Springfield. I'm not sure it means anything (it certainly doesn't mean they predate the other families since they are all Naps and Potentini) but it's just an observation.

I don't know if this has been mentioned before but was Thomas 'Toddo' Marino (TN: Salvatore Gaetano Maiorana) a capo at the time? He would have been at least a soldier.

The New Jersey crews were mostly mainland Italians, but there were some Sicilians including an interesting cluster of people from Enna/Caltanissetta.

- Angelo LaPadura - San Cataldo (B.1891; Immi. 1909)
- Carmine Battaglia - Enna (B.1896; Immi. 1902)
- Ernest Lazzara - Palermo
- Joseph Pecora- Enna
- Ralph Belvedere - Barrafranca (B.1905; Immi. 1923)
- Thomas Pecora - Enna

In 1936, Belvedere and Battaglia sponsored flags at their church (https://www.newspapers.com/image/525834229)

According to LCN Bios, Belvedere and LaPadura were close associates; Gene Catena derisively referred to them as “Mustaches”.

Carmine Battaglia wasn’t well liked either, going by what was said on wiretaps. I guess these guys never really fit in with the other members.

Tells you a lot when a guy who came to the US at 17 or 18 was still thought of as a "mustache" decades later. It's like Magaddino saying Chicago boss LoVerde was head of the "greaseball" faction when he came as a teen and had been in the US for 20 years.

Maybe they preferred to speak Italian or had an accent, kept more of the Sicilian culture alive. I think in mafia terms it refers to a mentality more than anything which is why today we still see guys who have been in the US their entire lives get called part of a Sicilian faction.

In this specific instance, they were said to be “Mustaches” because they had someone beaten.

I can see people like Catena, who were born and raised in the US, viewing those who immigrated in their late teens as greaseballs. Language probably played a big part. Someone with a strong accent or who didn’t know street slang would be noticeable.

Salvatore Celembrino's father Agosto and mother Maria were born in Napoli, the family lived in NY but for a time Agosto lived in Chicago, was naturalized there.

Joel, you might have posted some names in the last few pages that aren't reflected, I'm not ignoring your input I promise. Forgive me but this is very difficult to keep it all straight.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Amazing work putting all of this together CC. I just looked through the crews twice - I didn’t see Matthew “Matty the Horse” Ianiello on the list. Is there confirmation that he was made by 1963?

Was he part of Tieri’s crew?

I looked him up on MF and it says he's a soldier under "Mike Zass' brother."

Thank you, I missed him.

1 Removed Mike Panetti who died. (Former bosses, captains I plan on adding even though they are deceased. With the Gambinos I included those recently deceased within 5 years, with the Dallas Family I believe I included deceased members back in the 40's so it's really been uneven. They won't factor into the stats.

2 Added Joel's names and Ianiello.

3 Grumo? No way of telling if he meant Appula in Bari or Nevano in Napoli. Update, found it, he came from Grumo Appula.

Observation: the amount of Pugiesi and Basilicatesi (I think Potentini is more widely used) in this family is interested. I'm not seeing a Sicilian-centric crew in any of them. They are sprinkled in here and there.
