Re: What do We Know about the Newark Family?
Here’s something really interesting about the Troia murder:
Nicholas “Big Nick” Gallicchio was picked up after the hit. Most other sources reported it as Nicholas “Big Nick” Calliachi. I was never able to find a Nick Calliachi and this explains why.
——————-
This specifically says that the police believed that Nicholas Gallicchio acted as a “finger man” in the Troia murder. It also identifies a Joseph Barocco rather than a Charles Barraco.
———————
There were only two people named Nicholas Gallicchio living in Newark in 1930, a father and a son (https://www.familysearch.org/search/rec ... Id=1810731)
Also present in this household was Jerry Gallicchio born in in 1913; this matches Jerry “The Boot” Gallicchio, patriarch of the eponymous criminal ring.
In New Jersey Mob: Memoirs of a Top Cop, it's mentioned that Jerry was involved with Tommy Campisi [P.64] and that he was a member of the mafia [p.151] though it doesn't specify which family.
Essentially, Jerry Gallicchio’s father was present when Troia was murdered and was probably a Newark family member.

Have to say Joel you're a great new addition and are bringing stuff we didn't know to the table. You really take the right approach to this stuff and think critically. Thanks for coming aboard.

+1. Not just NJ stuff, of course, but you’ve really helped to shed some light on many of these NJ guys and raise some important questions around their networks (formal mafia structure, ancestry, etc).

Re: What do We Know about the Newark Family?
Benjamin Pizzolato was married to a Jennie Lombardino. (https://www.ancestry.com/imageviewer/co ... cessSource)
I'm pretty sure that this was Paul Lombardino's sister. They were all arrested along with Rose Lombardino for fraud.
------------------
I'm not sure if/when Ben Pizzolato was ever in Atlantic City.
- His 1950 Census record has him living in Essex County (https://www.ancestry.com/discoveryui-co ... 1179:62308)
- His 1964 obituary (https://www.newspapers.com/clip/1051301 ... dale-news/) says that he moved to Florida 10 years prior [~1954]
That would leave a 4-year gap for him to have lived in AC, which is possible. Another possibility is that he moved there after 1950 and was back and forth between NJ-Florida till his death.
The Pizzolato in Atlantic City idea comes from this wiretap(https://www.maryferrell.org/showDoc.htm ... elPageId=6) where Anthony Boiardo and Ray DeCarlo reference Dolasco's caporegime as a "Benooks/Penooks" in Atlantic City. This conversation took place in 1963.

Re: What do We Know about the Newark Family?
Maybe Benooks was not Benny Pizzolato but actually Giuseppe Abate who lived in AC. "Benooks/Penooks" sounds more like a phonetic take on the nickname "Pinuzzo" (often pronounced "Pen-ootz") for the name Giuseppe. It would mean Abate was a captain earlier on than was assumed.
The Lombardino-Pizzolato connection is a great find. An FBI source who dated back to the 1920/30s said the Lombardinos and Pizzolatos were close associates and back then part of the same organization (Newark Family).
Your findings recently have shown that the Vita "faction" intermarried with other "factions" like Troia's associates and the Lombardinos. Makes sense Newark Family members would intermarry like this as we see elsewhere.

Re: What do We Know about the Newark Family?
Abate would make sense. For one thing, the FBI usually listed a Penooks (ph) as a capo in Atlantic City while listing Ben Pizzolato separately. (https://www.maryferrell.org/showDoc.htm ... PageId=124) Abate wasn’t listed.
Abate was an interesting guy. This 1983 report(https://books.google.ca/books?id=0JLI0U ... &q&f=false) says: “These associations allow Abate to act as a “Consigliere” or mediator in the territorial squabbles over Atlantic City.”
There probably weren’t too many issues in AC before the casinos opened, but if we ignore that part, the idea of him being a de facto consigliere over New Jersey members in other families is intriguing. I can’t help but wonder if he inherited this role from Sam Accardi. He had ties to all the ex-Newark people and could be likely be described in a similar way.

Re: What do We Know about the Newark Family?
Maybe the Lucchese Family had a council haha. Got to keep myself in check but that's very interesting. Sounds like it might just be using it to refer to him being a mediator not an actual position.
I know we've debated where Accardi belonged but I strongly believe he was the Lucchese captain before Abate. His son Carmine and all of the NJ guys from Vita ended up with that crew. His bro-in-law/cousin was Onofrio Abate and supposedly Joe Abate was another cousin but came from Marsala not Vita. We know Accardi was related to people in other Trapani villages.
--
I'm still intrigued by Onofrio Milazzo too. He represented Lucchese NJ associates (Accetturo + Jimmy Craparotta) in a sitdown with Funzi Tieri and was said to be with the Sicilian mafia before apparently transferring to the Luccheses. Along with him being allowed to represent Lucchese associates at a high-level sitdown, when John DiGilio was beating a guy up he stopped when Milazzo showed up and became very afraid which is not like DiGilio. I think it's because he knew Milazzo was made and had to be careful.
Milazzo was a cousin of Craparotta whose family def came from Trapani but I couldn't find the town and Milazzo came to the US late and was only here for a short time so few records to confirm him. There's that Buccino reference to Joe Abate being made in Sicily before the US too but don't know if that has basis. Def seems true of Milazzo.
If you or someone can find out the exact town Craparotta's family came from that would help us narrow it down.
Also if Accetturo's info is accurate there were many more made guys with the Lucchese NJ crew than we know and he said Abate was so secretive he wouldn't even talk to Accetturo when they met. Maybe some of the unknown guys were old holdovers from the Newark Family. Accetturo was told their crew originally came from the Newark Family when it broke up.

Re: What do We Know about the Newark Family?
Joel, look at the 1930 census. The Ben Pizzolato you reference being married to Jennie is not the Luchese member (1896-1964). The Luchese member Biagio "Benjamin" Pizzolato was married to a woman named Mary. Both are in the 1930 census. The Luchese member (born 1896) is listed to being married to Mary and another one is listed (born 1904) is the one married to Jennie. Two different guys. Probably related. You can find Biagio "Benny" Pizzolato's naturalization records on ancestry (married to Mary) and he is still married to her in 1930 census in Newark, while the Benajmin Pizzolato (born 1904, married to Jennie) is in Irvington.JoelTurner wrote: ↑Mon Sep 19, 2022 12:42 pm Benjamin Pizzolato was married to a Jennie Lombardino.
