Sardegna has no native mafia organization, so I assume that this map reflects activities and investments from non-local groups, same as Northern Italy. I’ve seen references to Camorra activities and/or investments in Sardegna, so that might be what’s being captured here.

Apart the Anonima Sequestri in the 1960s-1990s the part in yellow is the Costa Smeralda where there are rich tourists and sardinians and other mafiosi are involved in drug traffick, prostitution and gambling.

Cool map. Reggio is all red.

I wonder what that red dot northeast of Genoa is? Just from looking at maps there doesn't even seem to be a major city there.

Piacenza province, Emilia-Romagna. Not a highly urban area at all, but from what I understand it's had a major 'Ndrangheta presence for years now.

In this years the Aemilia process condamned 70 ndranghetisti to 700 years in prison.

Is most mafia activity outside of the south (Rome, Emilia-Romagna, etc) the result of Calabrians or Sicilians moving there to open up shop? Or is the mafia activity coming from Italians indigenous to those regions?

While there have and are Italian groups indigenous to those regions, like the "Mafia Capitale" group in Rome for example, most of that is members and affiliates of the syndicates based in southern Italy and Sicily setting up operations in the north.
All roads lead to New York.

Great thanks, I never heard about this. I’ll definitely have to do some reading up on it

Although surrounded by Calabria, Campania and Puglia, I have always been intrigued by the fact that there is no mafia organization (to my knowledge) born in Basilicata
