I believe his dad lived in Rosemont at the time, which is next to where i grew up. Lot of Outfit connections there...the longtime mayor was deeply mobbed up and owned a motel with Sam Giancana. My mom always told me a story about how a business partner of Stephens' was found in a parking garage with a bullet hole in head in the early 80s, dont know if it was just a local myth though.

Rantis was not just a loan client, however, as he was named as having his own “syndicate connections”; Rantis was busted in 1970 for having counterfeit bills and was also alleged to have been involved in some outfit-connected Teamsters money laundering scams related to suburban hotels (IIRC). Clearly the outfit knew that Rantis had whacked Marcello and Grisafe, as he himself wound up as “trunk music” less than two weeks after — Rantis went missing in December and his frozen body was found in Feb 1974 in a car trunk near O’Hare. The story has been that Jimmy was involved in clipping Rantis, which is allegedly how he made his bones for the family. Later in ‘74, the new owner of Rantis’s sandwich joint discovered Marcello and Grisafe’s bodies in oil drums in the storage area; Grisafe’s legs were cut off to fit him in the barrel, as he was a massive 6’4” beast (what we used to call a “bone crusher” in Chicago). Three bounced checks from Rantis were found on their persons. The Trib reported at that time that Grisafe was about to be indicted for extortion when he was killed, part of a major DOJ investigation into outfit-connected extortionate control of numerous Chicagoland businesses.

For this reason, I doubt that it was common knowledge that Jimmy wasn’t full Ital. Margaret was also the sister of notorious outfit-connected narcotics trafficker Carlo Urbanati.

Frank Bompensiero mentioned August Phillip Caponi aka “Mickey Capone”, a wealthy produce distributor from Chicago, as his close friend and Joe Zerrilli’s primary produce contact:



No relation to those other Capones. August Caponi was born in 1911 in Chicago to Filippo Capone and Antonina DiCola of Tèrmini Imerese, who immigrated to Chicago in the 1880s along with a number of relatives. August grew up on Erie in the Grand Ave Patch before later moving to Augusta and Kedzie in Humboldt Park, and worked for his family’s long-standing produce business. He moved to CA in the 40s and died in San Diego in 1982. If he was closely connected to Bomp and Zerilli, I’d expect that his family was probably connected in Chicago.

This reminded me that many years ago I had heard about some Capones, said to be completely unrelated to Al Brown, who were huge produce big shots in Chicago. Frank Capone, who died in 2019, was a major force in Chicago’s produce industry, as the long time head of produce for Dominick’s Finer Foods. Looks like Frank Capone was the son of “Mickey Capone’s” younger brother Tony Capone and Josephine Raimondi (another family from Tèrmini). Frank started out working on the South Water St market in the Loop for the LaMantia Bros. Arrigo Co., which for decades was the largest produce brokerage company in the US (buying from producers and selling to supermarket chains); the LaMantia (intermarried with Battaglias) and Arrigo families were, of course, also from Tèrmini.

Some info that I’ve come across states that the Chicago produce LaMantia family was related to LaMantias and Calderones who ran produce companies in Western PA and OH from way back, so the possibility of old connections to the “Society of the Banana”, which I’ve always suspected would almost certainly have had strong links to Chicago, came to mind.

Was looking at an interesting report from 1972 with an informant in Mexico who was in contact with people who knew Giancana during his time there. Stated that Giancana lived in a “luxury house” in an exclusive section of Cuernavaca under the name “Sam De Palma”. That Richard Cain had previously lived in Mexico around 1962 and that Cain’s ex-wife worked at the American embassy. That Giancana had apparently been barred from entering Mexico and was thus reputed to have been under investigation for living in the country illegally. In 1972, Giancana was alleged to have left Mexico for Italy, and to have subsequently moved to Beirut, where the informant believed he was living at the time of the report.

In another file, the FBI stated that Giancana’s handler in Mexico was Mexico City attorney Jorge Castillo, who was apparently born in Shreveport, LA. Castillo was the one who arranged the purchase of the homes that Giancana was reported to be staying at. Apart from the mansion in Cuernavaca, Giancana had a penthouse in Mexico City, paid for in cash by Castillo; Giancana frequently played golf at a Mexico City country club under Castillo’s membership. Giancana also attended parties in Mexico City and Acapulco with Castillo. Along with “Sam De Palma”, Giancana was using “Richard Scalzitti” as an alias. In 1966, Mexico had denied Giancana’s application for resident immigrant status on the grounds of his reputed affiliation with organized crime. Castillo had been petitioning the government to change their decision and telling them that Giancana had not re-entered Mexico since 1966.
