Visiting San Jose, 1963

Post by thekiduknow »

Inspired by CC's threads, I thought a while back I should look into the San Jose Family to get a break from the Bonannos.

Structure wise, here is what I have:

Boss: Joseph Cerrito

Underboss: Charles Stanley Carbone

Consiglieri
Philip Octavia Morici
Stefano “Steve” J. Zoccoli(Secretary)

The above makeup the Council.

Zoccoli succeeded Thomas J. Nicosia, who succeeded Anthony Scavuzzo

Capodecine:
Emanual “Manny” Figlia
-Peter Misuraca

Angelo Marino[Successor to Salvatore Marino]
-Alex Cammarata
-Salvatore Costanza

Members:
Dominick Anzalone
Frank G. Buffa
Alex Camarata
Salvatore Nick Cerrito
Leo Cusenza
Donato Ditri
Antonio Di Giovanni Ditri
Domenic Ferrito
Geraldo Giuseppe Gallo
Nicolo Mario Guastella
Angelo Giammona
Anthony Maggio
Salvatore Marino
Prospect Salvatore Mule
Thomas J. Nicosia
Anthony Scavuzzo
Frank Sorce
Salvatore Andrea Vassallo
Fillipo Zoccoli

Recently deceased Members:
Joseph Cusenza(DOD: 4/26/1961)(Caporegime)
Vincenzo Figlia(DOD: 1963)

29 known members

Any edits/suggestions welcome. I think we can try and flesh out the crew assignments

Fantastic work, kid. Interesting that the Zoccoli brothers are from Santo Stefano and their mother was a Musolino. Wonder if there's a relationship to Giuseppe Musolino.

Great work, Kid. Looks like the Figlias autocorrected to “Daughter”.

Thanks guys. Hopefully we can fill in some more gaps.

I think it would be cool to try and map out the family connections, both internal and with other Cosa Nostra families. Also the members who transferred.

Sorry, I don't see it. Where does it autocorrect to "Daughter"?

False alarm, looks like it was the browser that I was using earlier that automatically translated "figlia" from Italian, without warning me.

Interested in learning more about the D'Itri brothers. When did they arrive in the US, and did they arrive to the Bay Area initially or another area first? Any idea how they got plugged with the SJ mafia in the first place? Unlike the guys from Reggio Calabria, if they were from Campobasso/Molise, they were coming from an area without its own mafia, so I'm interested to know what their deal was. I have no idea what the overall breakdown of Italian settlement in the Bay Area was, so I have no idea if there were just a lot of people from Campobasso there (and thus perhaps longer-standing ties with the Sicilians), or if these guys were just sort of randos who got linked in by happenstance.

I haven't found anything on Donato yet. But Antonio/Anthony looks like he first came to the US in 1937, heading to his father Giovanni in the Bronx. There's a record of him first filing for naturalization in Detroit in 1949, then being in NY in 1953 when his second child was born. He's in the Northern California area by 1955, as it says on his naturalization form that the witnesses knew him since then. I'll keep digging and see what else is out there.

I wonder if there's more to his time in Detroit, there are more than a few connections between San Jose/Detroit. He could also have gotten hooked up through someone in NYC.

Pointing out the national connections, what Families some of these guys were involved with before CA, etc. would be cool since that was a big part of the Bay Area.

Not sure how well-known it is but Zoccoli was also the father-in-law of LA boss Pete Milano. Both Calabrese.

It's interesting that both Alex Cammarata and Anthony Scavuzzo had ties to the old Newark Family.

Scavuzzo used to live in Union, NJ and was even arrested with Joseph Accardi (https://www.newspapers.com/newspage/447540670/). He was very likely a member at the time.

Cammarata was made in San Jose but used to live in Belleville, NJ. Plus, he was married to Rose Misuraca whose father was a member.

You're saying John Misuraca was a member of the old Newark family before going to the Profaci family?

Yes, his brother Arturo "Art Price" Misuraca was very likely a Newark family member too.

-------------
Speaking of John Misuraca, he sponsored Angelo Giammona into the San Jose family.

(https://www.maryferrell.org/showDoc.htm ... elPageId=6)

It was revealed that GIAMMONA had been sponsored for LCN membership upon the recommendation of JOHN MISURACA, capo, Brooklyn family of the LCN. Reportedly, MISURACA desired a West Coast location suitable for meeting with members of the San Jose family and felt GIAMMONA's farm in rural Stanislaus County, California would facilitate such meetings.

By my count, that's the 4th member of the SJ family that he sponsored (the other 3 being Costanza, Cammarata, his brother Peter Misuraca)

Isadoro Costanzo was an early informant for the SS in San Francisco. He went with some Italian counterfeiters to San Jose-

4/16/1913 Costanzo, Angelo Turano CA San Jose 1215 San Pedro St Statton and Informant COSTANZO witness TURANO AND NO 4 arriving in San Jose and being greeted warmly by a stranger: 33 or more, 5-4, 140 lbs, med.build, shaven, very dark, oval face, dressed roughly in overcoat and trousers, no vest, rides a bicycle. They went to barber shop at 125 Post St, off San Pedro St, and which place the stranger dropped them and rode off on his wheel. No 4 visited a corner saloon then went into a couple of small stores on Market st, returning to the barber shop. At 3:50 the stranger returned with a red wagon, loaded the stuff in the grips into the wagon and No 4 and TURANO got in and they started off down the street. There not being time to hunt up an auto, I grabbed an express wagon and COSTANZO was left behind because TURANO knows him. No 4 and TURANO went up Market street and no 4 joined a tall Italian. At 4:15 they went to San Pedro st, stopping at a Roma grocery store, where No 4 got off and bought something. They then drove to 1215 San Pedro St, which is an Italian residence where they were apparently well known. After a few mins they went to Alameden Road and then to Foxworthy Road and then to Rose Road and then turned into a hidden road among a prute orchard. I kept a mile behind them. Passing where they entered I was unable to see any trace of them. Through a field glass I saw the wagon up at a tumble down farm house and 3 subjects taking their stuff out of the wagon. This farm house is well concealed from the road and it is impossible to see it in driving past. I returned to San Jose, rejoining COSTANZO at the SP Depot. TURANO also went to 125 San Pedro St
5/11/1913 Angelo Turano. Antonio Orlando, Louis Cancilla CA San Jose 765 N 11th St, San Jose Followed TURANO and No 2 to San Jose, met by a number of Italians and then went to ranch owned by ANTONIO ORLANDO. 765 N 11th St is owned by LOUIS CANCILLA
