Caponigro himself was once misidentified as a Genovese member and most of the pre-1960s info on him shows him to associate very closely with the Genovese Family, including a big partnership with Richie Boiardo in the 1950s, so he was closely intertwined with them.

According to NK T-16, most gambling in Newark was controlled by a combination of Caponigro, Boiardo, and Dolasco. This was in December 1962/January 1963.

(https://www.maryferrell.org/showDoc.htm ... lPageId=26)

In January 1963, Russo and DeCarlo talk about how Caponigro had a fight with Angelo Bruno and Jerry Catena, this appears to have been recent. They mention that Boiardo tried to have Caponigro killed but Carmine Battaglia saved him, this was discussed previously in this thread.

Basically, Caponigro had issues with Bruno from day 1. He worked with the Genovese but had issues with them in the early 60s.
B. wrote: Fri Jul 22, 2022 7:29 pm. Both Fresolone and Licata said Caponigro started as a Gambino associate, but you don't see him associating as much with them. Nothing has surfaced that I'm aware of about when Caponigro was made.
Excellent observation!

I couldn’t find anything tying him to Anastasia or the Gambino family. I’d heard that he was involved in Willie Moretti’s murder, but similarly couldn’t find much tying him to that. Robilotto and LiCalsi were arrested for it, I don’t think he was.

(https://www.maryferrell.org/showDoc.htm ... lPageId=67)

In 1948, Caponigro was delivering alcohol into Philadelphia for Peter Casella. This was during the time he was supposed to be an Anastasia associate.

(https://www.maryferrell.org/showDoc.htm ... lPageId=35)

Informant T-13 said that Caponigro inherited alcohol manufacturing after Marco Reginelli died, which was in May 1956.

(https://books.google.ca/books?id=jBK2ZK ... ro&f=false)

Here’s Caponigro’s arrest record.

So far, I haven’t seen anything linking him to the Gambinos. If I had to guess, he was made in the late 1940s into the Philadelphia Family.

In the Stefanelli transcripts, Licata said that Caponigro was brought into the Philadelphia Family under Joseph Bruno. If he was correct about that then Caponigro would at least be on record with the Philadelphia Family and possibly even inducted by the time Bruno died in 1946.

Great find, Chin. Joe Bruno was close to Anastasia so would make sense if Anastasia released him to Bruno.

Caponigro actually lived in Philadelphia for a time when he was young, I used to assume that was how he ended up with Philly but not sure how much of a role that played. Suggests he at least had relatives and was familiar with the city.

- Caponigro was a criminal at least by 1928, probably earlier.
- Joe Bruno was boss from 1936-46
- Caponigro and Louie Luciano were associates of Anastasia before being put with Philly

I wonder what crew they would have been in if they were made pre-1946. Maybe they were directly with the boss till the late 50s when Johnny Keys became a captain

Caponigro is super fascinating. He would have known people like Boiardo, Battaglia, etc. for decades by the 60s

I wouldn’t think so. He probably had family in Philadelphia, but my guess is he was introduced by Anastasia if he was with him first.

Joe Bruno lived in North Jersey and probably spent time with other North Jersey figures, he could have heard of an up-and-coming tough guy that way.

Another NJ guy from Enna/Caltanissetta. Good find.
From my Hometown <3 This is great to hear! I know that a few went to America, Brasil and Argentina. I gotta ask If the last name Belvedere is known. I know that we have a place in Barrafranca where we used to walk until today it is called Belvedere... Very interesting!

Hey that's pretty cool! I'm from Newbury Park so there's no famous criminals from here other than like Amanda Bynes lol. I've never heard of anyone else with Belvedere as their last name

July 1933- Paul Lombardino, Ben Pizzolato, their wives, and Rose Lombardino were arrested for defrauding a woman.

It’s a cool interaction between them before the family broke up.

Should be noted Bevinetto had a criminal record and wasn't just a random neighborhood guy.
Jerome Bevinetto REALLY wasn’t just a random neighborhood guy. He was Sam Monaco’s brother-in-law.

This is his obituary:

The Anna Monaco mentioned as his sister was married to the old underboss Sam Monaco. This is her census information. (https://www.ancestry.ca/discoveryui-con ... 58102:2442)

I had long wondered why Troia chose to join the Newark family. I suspect this could have been part of the reason. If his paisan Bevinetto, who was close enough to be shot with him, was the underboss’ brother-in-law, that could be the link.

It also brings to mind Troia being close to Maranzano and Sam Monaco being killed at the same time.

Very good find. So there was intermarriage between the San Giuseppe Jato and Vita guys. Might add weight to Bevinetto being a member.

Not sure that's specifically what would have brought Troia to Newark but it's probably part of an overall pattern to these relationships.

I don’t know if Bevinetto was actually from San Giuseppe Jato. This was his census information (https://www.ancestry.ca/discoveryui-con ... 50757:2442). His brother was born in Camporeale according to his WW2 draft card.

Antonio Sunseri’s an interesting guy too. According to this article (https://www.newspapers.com/newspage/143323818/) his alias was Anthony Cangeloso. I recall Riela being involved with some people named Cangelosi from his FBI file.

Oh that would make much more sense if he was from Camporeale or Trapani. I said before Monaco's business partner "C.Mangiaracina" might be Calogero Mangiaracina from Camporeale.

Camporeale is closely linked to San Giuseppe Jato (same mandamento) so I could see Bevinetto being considered "paesan" like Sunseri said even if he's from the other village.

Interesting because I have an article that stated one of those present was Anthony Cangelosi, the store owner and that Suneri was its proprietor. Interesting also is that Phil Emordeno (Immordino) from Rockford was related to the Cangelosi's and they were all from San Giuseppe Iato.
