Could legalization be the end of drug trafficking?

Until they were outlawed (cocaine, heroin) or regulated (morphine) they were sold freely but then drug addiction problems were unknown or ignored.
Even for the moral of the time those who did morphine were preferred over alcoholics who created problems with fights and more.
Would it ever be possible to legalize cocaine and heroin? And would that end the multibillion-dollar drug trade?

I think it would be very good for wiseguys. like in canada, toronto specifically alot of mobsters and their hells angels pals got into the legal weed business. I think the cartels would take a big hit, because some of them might still get in on the legal aspect of it through intermediaries ect, but it wouldnt be enough to fund their private armies of criminals in mexico, leaving thousands of criminals scrounging for a buck and make a big power vacuum. There would be a big uprise in other crimes such as robberies ect in mexico, and it would essentially look alot like how brazil is.

The blackmarket MJ market still exists in places where it's recreationally legal . Oddly enough, if they ever did have dispensaries and recreational legality for "hard" drugs like coke, dope, etc. - I really would think that it would put an actual, huge dent in the black market. But for Marijuana...no. Most people who are using dope are using because they "have" to and would much rather go to a steady, stable, consistent source where the product is safe, always available, and always good. Coke, I do not know too much about - but I imagine it being the same; users would rather have a clean, safe product and less sketchy transactions.

But for MJ there are still benefits...mostly affordability and convenience...to using the blackmarket, versus buying over the counter. For *some* people at least.

I think the blackmarket in canada for cigarettes is probably bigger than the one for weed. The cigarettes are so expensive and come in these ugly brown packs, alot of people get the non taxed ones from native reserves ect. Almost 20 bucks for a regular pack of smokes meanwhile a carton of natives can be bought for like 23 bucks, and they dont even taste bad if you get the right brand

Tax avoidance isn’t ended when something on legal. Look at the street price of illegal pot in some states. Wouldn’t one possibility be siphoning off legal substances for the black market?
