I never thought his testimony was particularly damaging and he wasn't really pressed with any tough questions. He would have been hit with contempt if he didn't testify so maybe he was granted permission to do so. Someone like Toots, who apparently didn't care much for Frank Calabrese, may have given the green light for Talarico to take the stand. This wouldn't be unprecedented in the Outfit (Paul Ricca, John Matassa).

Also, you never know. Maybe he was put on the shelf when Angelo died and figured he had nothing to lose by taking the stand? A lot of questions about the whole situation, that's for sure.
Angelo was his uncle, so presumably, whether he was made or not, that was his "rabbi" in the Outfit.
I also wonder if he was just shelved once Angelo died.
I remember a story I think from Frank jr that talarico said he was out and Ronnie Jarrett and I think shorty lamantia beat the shit out of him. The way he was discussed it didn’t seem to me he was made. Remember it came out shorty wasn’t made either. Of all the people that we know got made in the 3 ceremonies we know about those were all high ranking guys that had done a lot. Talarico didn’t seem to cut it. Rocco Lombardo either as antillar pointed out. Or joe difronzo for that matter. I know wiseguy and I went through this not that long ago and I can’t remember the exact number we came up with but it was under 15 made guys and probably closer to 10. And I think some have died since then. No doubt that family is on fumes within 10 years, maybe less they will be another Cleveland
I'm inclined to agree most of the names mentioned by everyone here, but I'm just trying to find out what the FBI knew, when they knew it, and what (possible) justification they may have had for that intel.

I always thought Talarico was a weird one. He was also reporting to Ronnie Jarrett while Frank Sr was imprisoned. I don't think a made guy would be subordinated to a non-made guy, but who knows. Like Antiliar said, I'd be interested in seeing source material for these guys who were presumably made. *Someone* had to think it so, otherwise they wouldn't have been included on these lists. As I mentioned earlier, maybe they had Nick C vet these lists, being that he was a cooperating made guy. We'd almost certainly know if guys like Talarico were made as Nick worked directly with him. Unless someone else is outed publicly as a cooperator, I'm not sure we will ever know what their reasoning is for including them.

I just find it all fascinating to dissect.
This is basically what I've gleaned from what I've looked into it, but also more particularly the work of others on the forums.

If my assumption about the police booklet is correct (that being the FBI supplied them with the "made member" identifications), then the FBI identified D'Amico, Joe DiFronzo, Bruno Caruso, Talarico, and Rocco Lombardo as made. As discussed, we can say that they were probably incorrect on all counts (except possibly Bruno), but for every one they misidentified, you could probably replace each with an unknown member, so the actual total probably doesn't change.

Since the list of possible members is probably only accurate for one - Bruno Caruso - the updated list should probably be increased to 15 members. However, it would be naïve to assume that the FBI has made public its most recent information. Anyone who's ever requested an FBI file can attest to the fact that the Bureau likes to keep secrets. Moreover, insider sources (such as what I previously posted in this thread) indicate that the Outfit hasn't stopped making new members. My source named Louis Rainone and the Lobue brothers. I have other names from other sources too. So to assume that the list of 15 names is comprehensive would be a mistake. I think it would be fair to assume that the current Outfit probably has something like 25 members (including those who are inactive and in prison).

Fully agree with you on this. The Outfit is an active criminal organization so for them just to stop making members for no reason would be wrong. Now the quality of these new members is another story but I don’t think the feds can get a completely accurate picture without having someone flip like Nick Calabrese, and even with that the fact that the different crews are not that tightly connected makes it impossible for the informant to be 100% accurate when in regards to the other crews. Also, I know there has been only 2 or 3 confirmed ceremonies since the 70s but there obviously had to be more considering Vena and Sarno were both obviously made sometime in the 90s.

Your current info on Rainone and the Lobue brothers was huge and gives a tiny glimpse into the current Outfit.

Shorty had a lot of weight in the neighborhood. I know they caught that bit on tape with Calabrese seeming to dress him down about talking to the NY guys, but I never bought into it. The problem with a lot these guys is they always try to make themselves seem more at someone else's expense. Frank Cullotta said some stuff about Calabrese Sr as well that seemed to not make sense. You never know I guess.

They obviously didn't give names at the time but that 28 member figure they gave in 2007 seemed to be total members. And that number made sense in terms of earlier larger estimates, showing the decline.

It goes without saying I'm skeptical that anyone who would be in a position to actually know about Outfit ceremonies would then be talking about them online. And it goes without saying I'm skeptical of ongoing ceremonies in the first place, especially considering we have seen consistent decline in membership for decades now.

They've lost more than 3 members in the last 15 years and, even if by chance they were still making new members, I doubt they'd be making enough to have 25 members now. But that's me.

Not much activity these days. 47 members back in the 1990s. 28 members in 2007. That tells us something. They stop making members for the same reasons other families have. Except for what appear to be relatively rare exceptions, like Sarno and Vena, the motive and impetus isn't there anymore.

I don’t know if sarno and vena were necessarily exceptions. They most likely got made around the same time as magnafichi I would guess. Mid 90’s. Who has been made since is the real question. I find the list pretty comprehensive and while I’m sure there’s a name or two we don’t know it’s doubtful they are making enough guys to cover all the ones that are dying. If they are making any at all

The figure of 28 members could still apply today. It's within my estimate of 25 +/- 5 current members. There's also no reason for them to have stopped making members, as Patrickgold wrote. Chicago still has a pool of Italians and Italian-Americans, still has a high number of relatives of known members living in Cook County (I know this because I administer a Chicago Outfit group on Facebook with around 18,000 members), and there are still immigrants moving to Illinois from Italy. Chicago is not in the same boat as Los Angeles or Dallas.

Also noting that induction ceremonies made in the 1980s to 2000s since we have to account not just for Sarno and Vena, but also Inendino, Cautadella, Bruno Caruso and Magnafichi. Donald "Sponge" Scalise was another suspected member (he died in 2013) and Mike Sarno is believed to have led at least one making ceremony. Plus, ceremonies tend to include five or more people, so there are probably others unaccounted for. Besides, as I mentioned I've spoken to insiders who gave other names.

At any rate, you are free to believe what you want. But the evidence is there that the Outfit isn't dead quite yet.

I know Wiseguy is rightfully weary of "non-official" sources but this isn't some nobody posting the info, it is Antiliar, whose judgment I don't question. He has done a lot of great (at times groundbreaking) work and research, and if his source was bullshitting, Liar would not have shared the info to begin with.

For me, it's not really about Antiliar. As I said, for me it's about the likelihood of a person, who would be among a relative few, to actually be in a position to know who is made (perhaps including when they were made) in Chicago. People who haven't been publicly identified as made like the others on that list. And then they are online talking about it. That seems a stretch to me, regardless of who it is coming through on the forum. All due respect to Antiliar aside, I'd have to see more evidence than just what amounts to hearsay before considering someone made.

I think Pete put it well. The guys listed above (Sarno, Vena, Inendino, Cautadella, Magnifichi) appear to have been made during the 1990's. I haven't seen as much evidence for Bruno Caruso or Donald Scalise. As Pete said, the question of guys being made after the 1990's, is the real question. Maybe there is one or here not identified but the list I posted (same names posted by many others) seems to be pretty comprehensive. In other words, I don't see any real evidence for their being a significant number of unidentified "sleeper" members in Chicago today.
All roads lead to New York.

Well, the intel on Chicago has never been the greatest. The 1985 list didn't have ten of the guys from the 1983 making ceremony including two capos and another who helped conduct it. Fast forward 15 years later and they have at least half a dozen guys listed as made whose status was, if not flat out wrong, highly in question. So, they have a history of undercounting and misidentifying. This doesn't take anything away from the FBI agents -- they did the best with what they had and it's obvious they were struggling to find quality informants and intelligence on who was made, which probably lasts to this day.

Now, besides court testimony, we haven't seen much of what Nick C knows and probably won't until he passes and we can get some additional files, but it's possible that Nick was able to correct or clarify what the FBI had, but until we see the results, we can only guess at what he revealed. Even then, he was in prison for the last half-dozen years before cooperating, so there is still probably a limit as to what he knew of an Outfit at the turn of the century.

Is it possible Anthony Zizzo was included in the 28 member figure from 2007? I checked and he disappeared on August 31, 2006. I don't know when or if he was ever declared legally dead. If he was technically only missing when the list was put out in 2007 there is a good chance he was included in it.

I doubt they included him, even though I don't believe he has ever been declared legally dead.

I brought him up because there was a Colombo member who went "missing" in 1969 and he still showed up on LE members lists up to the 1980s.
