Joey loved the people and the people loved Joey. He was a charismatic guy. Also, I’m sure he was more comfortable around blacks than some other Outfit guys might have been. I had a good friend as a kid who worked at Burger Baron. He’s not able to provide insight beyond what everyone in the neighborhood already knew, that it was super mobbed up. He saw tons of guys that he describes as “mobsters” there all the time, but has no idea who any of them were. He says he didn’t ask any questions lol. He had one Italian dude put a gun to his head once as a kid (he’s PR) for basically nothing, so he didn’t stick his nose in.

There were a ton of fights at Burger Baron in the 1980s. I have a cousin who was actually involved in this one - Michael Catanese was the younger brother of Orlando Catanese, who was a North Side guy. My cousin was not a gang guy just a massive coke guy I gotta assume these were CNotes.

Yeah, it was still a very rough area then. Grand and Noble was never C-Notes territory, so far as I know, though they would go over there. Used to be GLs back in the days, but by the 80s/90s it was PR gangs -- MLDs on Erie and Wood, SDs, and the Milwaukee Kings chapter on Huron and Noble, a couple blocks up from Burger Baron. Those MKs were small but very vicious. I had a friend as a kid who was an MK from Noble who got sent away for murder. The Mexican dudes in this case may have been affiliated with one of the above (though they were more PR), who knows. Grand and Noble itself was sort of "off-limits" to gangbangers, as that whole strip was known to be controlled by the mob and generally, you didn't mess around on Grand itself over there.

Also, I would imagine based on his name that this Franceschetti kid was either from Italy or his parents were — Napolitan’, if I had to bet. In the Hagedorn book, he has “Sal Martino” talking about an important C-Note in the 90s who was born in Italy. The book calls him Dominic, but I don’t know if that was his real name.
