When California Dreaming Becomes Deadly: Was Hamilton (ON) Mob Figure “Made” In L.A. In The Weeks Before He Was Killed?

By Scott Burnstein

February 18, 2022

February 18, 2022 — The FBI and Royal Canadian Mounted Police are teaming up to explore the theory that slain reputed Hamilton mafiosi, Albert Iavarone, was inducted into the L.A. mob at the request of organized crime leaders in New York shortly prior to being murdered, according to multiple sources familiar with the joint-agency probe.

Iavarone was gunned down in his driveway on September 13, 2018 returning home to his wife and two kids after a night out with friends. The 50-year old real estate agent had no criminal record at the time of his death and lived in the swanky suburban Ancaster neighborhood. Per RCMP intelligence reports and travel records, Iavarone vacationed in Southern California with his family the week of the Labor Day holiday in America, just 10 days before his slaying.
Authorities link the Iavarone hit to the ongoing strife in the Canadian mafia, which began in Montreal in the late 2000s and reached the Hamilton area a decade later. Albert Iavarone and his older brother, Tony, both knew and associated with members of the Musitano crime family, according to RCMP investigative files. Hamilton mob-boss brothers Angelo (Big Ange) Musitano and Pasquale (Fat Pat) Musitano, were assassinated in 2017 and 2020, respectively.

In the months following Iavarone’s murder, the FBI started to receive tips from informants in New York and California that Iavarone’s murder was, at least partially, related to New York City mafia powers getting him his button in L.A. so he could travel as a “representario,” liaisoning in the U.S. for an Ontario crime group. The arrangement the NYC mob made with reputed L.A. mafia don Tommy Gambino upset reputed Buffalo Godfather Joseph (Big Joe) Todaro, who allegedly oversees underworld activity in Western New York and whose Magaddino crime family has always been the American “La Cosa Nostra’s” conduit to Hamilton.

Tommy Gambino, 58, is the son of Rosario Gambino of the Cherry Hill Gambinos, the New York crime family’s drug-heavy New Jersey crew. For the past ten years, Tommy Gambino has been the de-facto chief of what’s left of L.A.’s Dragna crime family, per sources in law enforcement. The elder Gambino was deported to Italy in 2009.

It seems rather unlikely to me that Iavarone could have been inducted by Tommy Gambino in L.A. while the Family has been inactive for years, especially since Gambino also seems to have been retired for a long time. But I'm waiting to see the developments of this story...

I feel the same way and was surprised to read this story. Why would NY need LA to make him as a favor? At any rate, Buffalo/Hamilton doesn't seem to worry too much about shooters from LA coming around to avenge their made guy..

And I guess the other thing is I guess maybe, if true, this was done to try to protect him. Angelo Musitano was dead by then and his brother and whatever else was left of that clan under serious pressure...

Here's what the Hamilton Spectator published in 2020:
On June 30, 2017 the police agent talks about A Iavarone (believed to be Albert) being "straightened out" with an L.A. Family and that Joe Todaro was mad about not being told this. Being "straightened out" is a term used when a man is initiated as "made" Mafia member.
The "police agent" was Bonanno member Vincenzo Morena. If true, Iavarone was made well over a year before he was killed.

If something wasn't lost in translation, the only LA / Ontario connections I can think of are when Inzerillo and Casamento went to Ontario years ago to meet with people and the rumors of Frank Cali having ties to Toronto. If Tommy Gambino is still trying to do things, he's part of that clan so they do have connections to the area.

B,

My sources dispute the Spectator's timeline.

Wow, a Canadian OC guy made by LA, which drew the ire of Buffalo. Can't wait to see the responses on this thread! :D

Serious question- if Iavarone (which BTW there are Iavarones in Tampa- did Albert come from Santo Stefano or Allessandrai Della rocca?) was indeed made into L.A., and subsequently killed, this would be the first murder of a made L.A. guy since when?

I think the first since Frank Bompensiero in 1977.

If one wanted to engineer a story to cause a breakdown here, this would be it, lol.

I could be wrong but I believe they're from Campobasso.

In the Southern California itself? Tommy Gambino and and Michael Esposito. Louie Caruso in Phoenix. Russell Masetta in Cleveland. Rocco Zangari in Buffalo.

That's what's left of the LA family.
All roads lead to New York.

According to Kenny Gallo, Paduano never did get made. He was scheduled to be made but the ceremony was called off because the guys were being followed by LE.

Rusty Mssetta is probably dead. He was the brother in law of the Milano brothers so he would be ancient if he were still alive. He was shelved in the 1980s and moved to Cleveland.
