Re: Bonanno 1960s chart
For size estimates:
- Sam says at the start of the war 60 members broke away from Joe Bonanno and sided with the Commission while "about 200" initially stayed loyal to Bonanno for a total of ~260.
- Sciacca said there were 182 a short time later but the other Bonanno member with him says there are 100 members -- either the other guy was giving a smaller estimate of the total or he meant there were around 100 other members in addition to the 182, which would place them around ~282. Personally I think the other guy was just giving his own guess, as they tell Magaddino they basically have everyone on board in the Family except the Bonanno faction.
- It's not clear if Sciacca included the Bonanno faction and Arizona/Canada in with his count. The way he says it makes it sound like he might be referring only to NYC/NJ and there was a plan at this time to transfer the Arizona members to Los Angeles and the Canadian members to Buffalo according to the DeCavalcante tapes. If Sciacca wasn't including Bonanno loyalists, Arizona, and Canada that would put the total at well over 200 and I'd think at least 220.
- Ray Patriarca told one of his members in late 1964 that Bonanno had between 200 and 400 members.
- Joe Bonanno said in his book 300 members voted for him as boss and 7 voted for Frank Italiano, so I guess he estimates the Family at ~307 for 1931. Many members were killed after this so they would have lost slots. DeCavalcante's 260 estimate would be realistic based on that.
Wonder if Bill gave an estimate to the FBI when he cooperated. He told them 15-20 captains before the war.

Don't know what he said to the FBI but in Honor Thy Father he claimed 15 Captains and 300 members. In Bound By Honor he claimed 350 members.

We talked about it a bit in this thread. Another size estimate comes from a source in June of 1967, who broke the family down into three factions lead by Zicarelli, Bill, and Sciacca, equalling approximately 175 members, but I'm not sure if that would include Montreal or Arizona.

Re: Bonanno 1960s chart
To help with caps here is who I have as dying in 1960s:
Giovanni Messina, Michael "Mike Angelo" Angelino, and Giuseppe Asaro Sr died in 1963.
Michael Allegato and John DiBella in 1964.
Joseph Notaro, John Tartamella, Frank LaBruzzo in 1966(bad year for the Joe and Bill)
Anthony DiGiovanna and Thomas D'Angelo(murder) in 1967. If the Vincent Garofalo that was shot with Vincent Cassasse was indeed a member, he would be another one.
Michael Consolo(murder) and Joseph Spadaro in 1968.
Antonio Domingo, Michael Adamo and Frank Mari(both murders) in 1969.
I'm sure there are more, especially during 1957-1960.

Fascinating stuff.
Aside from this chart, a Bonanno War and a Bonanno Arizona faction of those who went with him would be interesting and informative. Once we hammer out this first 1963 chart, the rest should be quick to make.

We can include these deceased members, maybe those who died in the previous 5 years leading up to 63. I did that for the Gambinos w a few select members.Pogo The Clown wrote: ↑Sun Feb 06, 2022 8:46 am

I have some edits to make regarding the crew succession, and I found out the "rising stars" thing didn't come from Bill as I originally thought, but here is what I did a few months back. Motorfab was kind enough to do a visual chart, but I think if we do the 63 chart we could expand on it to include all the known members.

Another one is Joseph DiGiovanna, brother of captain Anthony DiGiovanna. He's described as a mafia member in the FBN book and died in 1961Chris Christie wrote: ↑Sun Feb 06, 2022 11:13 amWe can include these deceased members, maybe those who died in the previous 5 years leading up to 63. Thanks a lot Sir. Tell me if you need more infos/photos for the crew of Montreal or anything else. I probably have less material than stevan or kid for NY but it will be a pleasure to help for a Bonanno chartChris Christie wrote: ↑Sun Feb 06, 2022 11:35 amYou and MotorFab did a great job.
