Bonanno 1960s chart

Post by B. »

CC asked me to start a thread on the Bonanno Family circa 1960s (1963?) to put together info for a chart ala the Gambino one.

Kiduknow has been doing great work on this era so he and others can no doubt help a lot with the captain ranks and member info. Nash has a lot of info on the family trees + photos and Stevan Tod also has a lot of rare photos. Antimafia might have extra info on the Canadians.

Pulled a lot of this from the 1963 text chart CC made with HK a while back and added a few names. Could no doubt use refinement and other details but went through myself to add the hometowns I know or found.

^ That was used to help make the above list w/ a few additions and changes.

Around ~175 names on my list. Paul Sciacca told Magaddino they had 182 members circa January 1964. A few on the 1963 list may have died by then, some may not be members, and there were no doubt members not ID'd (especially Canada). Overall not far from Sciacca's number.

Thanks for the Montreal names -- not confident in some of them given a number of members were said by Sciacca/Magaddino to be in Magaddino's territory (Ontario).

Might be best for Montreal to include the confirmed members and say there were ~20 total since that's the number given by the informant who recently visited them (probably Bill) and we know they kept that number for decades.

The 182 mentioned by Sciacca might not include Canada since that crew was under Magaddino's direction/protection at the time (probably like the former Gallo faction guys who were put under Gambino for a time).

The only name I'm not sure 100% is Saputo and eventually Violi since he arrives in Montreal in 1963, otherwise, I'm very positive they were all members during the 60's. But maybe Violi was made at first in Ontario with Buffalo and then transferred ?

For the Bonanno guys made in Ontario, I'm even not risk to give any name, I have not a clue of who they might been

Im finishing up the Gams, like an asshole I might want to add Occupation and Wives but I'll start an excel sheet on the Bonannos maybe next week. In the meantime, this is a good thread to get started if we all were to attempt this. B. speaks very highly of KidYouKnow and Stevan Tod and if you guys are down to help, it'll be greatly appreciated. Full credit of course.

Made some notes on your list B.

John and Rosario Morale’s parents, Antonio Morales and Rose LaCorte(according to ancestry) were from Baucina.

John Aquaro’s father was Donato “Anthony”, from Ottati in Salerno. His mother was Angelina, but not sure where she was from.

The member Joseph Messina(1/20/14) was actually not the brother of other members Anthony and Giovanni Messina. His parents were Stefano Messina and Maria Mastrello, both from Alcamo.

Members Giovanni and Anthony Messina's parents were Bartolomeo and Margherita Messina, both from Castelvetrano. Giovanni died in 1961. Their brother Frank was reported by a source to be a member, I’ll need to dig to find it as he doesn’t show up on any membership lists. I also think that “Pat” is actually Anthony, as his middle name was Patrick and his ancestry page lists him as “Anthony(Pat) Messina”.

Thomas and Jerry D’Angelo’s parents were Louis D’Angelo and Angela Scavalito. I haven’t tracked down where they are from.

Pietro Alese from Paceco in Trapani. I think his father’s name was Rosario.

Michael Angelino died on 5/31/1963(apparently the same day as Giuseppe Asaro Sr). He was born in New York, and I think his parents were Vito and Giovanna/Joanna Ladiana. I haven’t figured out where they were from.

Antonio Badalamenti was born in Carini in Palermo. His parents were Vito Badalamenti and Vita Mannino, both also from Carini.

Antonio Bello is a mystery, but Bill Feather has a potential match with an Antonio Bello who was born in 1875 in Campania, and died in 1969 in San Jose . The report where Bello is mentioned has him dying in 1966/67 in New York.

Carmelo Bivona was born in Chiusa Sclafani, Palermo

I have Salvatore Bruno born in 1915. His parents were Salvatore and Mary Gervasi, both from Villaba, Caltanissetta.

Michael Cosenza also had heritage from Caltanissetta. His parents were Salvatore Cosenza and Venera Mangano, both from Caltanissetta.

I think Alphonse DeMarinis’ father Enrico was from Campania.

For Vito DeFilippo’s father Pasquale, I have him Caserta.

The Vincent Garofalo that was shot with Vincent Cassasse that’s mentioned in the Bonanno books, was actually an unrelated Vincent Garofalo who was born in 1925. He died the next month. Bill does say that Garofalo and Cassese were “two members”, but Cassasse was with the Genovese, so I’m not sure what Garofalo’s status was. He had been busted for hijacking a few times.

Salvatore Ippolito was born Gibellina Trapani.

Anthony Leone was born in Palermo. His father was Costantino Leone and mother was Francesca Buccheri.

Vito Licovelli was born in Terrasini, Palermo. Father was Vincenzo Licovelli, mother was Pauline Corollo.

Anthony Lucido’s parents were from Agrigento. Vito Lucido from Sambuca di Sicilia and Margherita Bavetta from Santa Margherita di Belice. Anthony married John Tartamella’s daughter Aurora.

Salvatore Marchese was born to Matteo Marchese, from Camporeale, and Laura DiMaria from Santa Ninfa. Laura arrived on the same boat as member Joseph DiMaria, and a Joseph DiMaria was a witness to her naturalization but I haven’t confirmed if they were siblings but I’d guess they were.

I’d have to recheck, but I have Armando Pollastrino having heritage from Cesinali Avellino, and Phil Rastelli from Campania.

Here is what I have for captains/crews during this time. The locations may not be 100% right, and they could very well have operated in other areas.

  2. Pietro Licata(LaBruzzo was overhead on the bug talking about how an "old white hair" named Licata was the only one who didn't congratulate him when LaBruzzo was promoted to caporegima]
John “Johnny Burns” Morale(Williamsburg/Manhattan)[The wiretap in LaBruzzo's office picked up Bonomo saying that Morales was still his captain in early 1964, so he might have kept his crew while acting boss/underboss]

  2. Stefano Cannone
  3. Nicholas ‘Nick the Battler” DiStefano
  4. Salvatore Ferrugia
  5. Vito Licavoli

Joseph Notaro(Bronx, Manhattan, Brooklyn, New Jersey)[A source claimed that Notaro had been an acting captain, but was made a full captain in early 1964, at the same time as Bill's promotion to consigliere. The source may be the LES Bonanno member informant. I know Galante was reported to still be a captain while in jail, so Notaro may have been acting captain circa 1963]

Too late to edit the post, but here are some guesses I have regarding crews:

Joseph Spadaro may have been under LaBruzzo, but I don't have anything to back that up other than their relationship and Spadaro's position in the in garment industry. If Salvatore Marchese is related to DiMaria, he may have been with LaBruzzo as well. Anthony Rizzuto too, as he was from Camporeale and said to hang around Wilson Ave and associated with Pietro Licata.

Sereno and Francesco Tartamella, Anthony Lucido, and Giovanni Fiordilino may have been with DiGregorio. The Tartamella's and Fiordilino were "rising stars" when DiGregorio became boss, and Lucido was his "contact man" for the Troutman street meeting.

Jerry D'Angelo under Smitty D'Angelo.

Nicholas Buttafuoco under Alfano.

B. once suggested that Paul "Legs" DiCocco may have been under Notaro.

Thomas Malette was under Valvo in the 70s, so he may have been under him in 63.
