2022 national confirmed membership counts

Post by JoeCamel »

Inspired by that awesome thread that Snakes started, I was thinking that some of the more educated guys here can put our heads together and do a family by family accounting of all made men confirmed to made that are still alive. A lot of guys have died even in the last two or three years in these outlying families: I am at work and have a notebook at home that I had some rough tallies and it will take me until late tonight to get there, but I was bored now and figured I’d see if any of you guys could get going. Especially since some of the historians on this board probably do have a current accounting or can look through the charts and start throwing out numbers.

We should probably use the old confirmed by FBI or at least two member/associate informants independently but hopefully this thread idea can generate some good conversations like snakes thread did. Thanks, I will get back to this

Chicago outift -14 confirmed by FBI/Pogo
Cleveland - 2
Bonnanos -126 if you go by living on today’s date and confirmed (depends what list you are looking at too.)
Los Angeles - 6-7
Buffalo - 12-30 (can you call the violi number a confirmed number?
Kansas City - 7 -15 depending who you ask

Etc etc. a lot of you guys have your information on hand and I don’t but that’s the kind of accounting I’m shooting for. What kind of presence there is in terms of surviving inducted members, not active criminal members. Granted some of these will be hard but I still think will lead to an interesting discussion

If you're going with confirmed members, it should typically be names that can confirmed by sources for all to see. Not unnamed sources or people claiming personal knowledge. That's worthless in this case.

That said, given their size and fluctuation, the NY families are obviously more difficult to track. While the figures for the non-NY families are specific the number of names I've seen publicly confirmed.

As for New York, if you look at specific membership counts (not generic rounded figures) over the past 20 years and average them out...

Genovese - 165
Gambino - 160
Bonanno - 125
Lucchese - 110
Colombo - 90

New Jersey - 33
New England - 25
Philadelphia - 38
Buffalo - 12
Rochester - 4
NE Pennsylvania - 0
Pittsburgh - 0
Cleveland - 1
Detroit - 7
Chicago - 14
Milwaukee - 0
St. Louis - 1
Kansas - 5
Tampa - 5
New Orleans - 1
Dallas - 0
Denver - 0
Los Angeles - 5
San Jose - 0
San Francisco - 0
All roads lead to New York.

Louis "Little Man" Caruso
Philip “Fat Philly” Dioguardi
Michael "Porno Mike" Esposito
Tommaso "Tommy" Gambino
Russell "Rusty" Massetta (Dead?)
Rocco "Rocky Bigfoot" Zangari (Dead?)

Here is what I have for the other families (including the strong possiblities).

Genovese: 139-141 (closer to but less than 200)

Gambino: 143-151 (It was closer to but less than 200 but they have lost almost 20 members in the last 3 years)

Bonanno: 133-139

Lucchese: 107-112

Colombo: 73-81 (so closer to 100)

Philly: 43 (so closer to 50)

New Jersey: 34-37 (so in the 40s)

New England: 25-34 (likely in the 30s)

Chicago: 19? (Some dispute on who is confirmed and who isn’t. Snakes and Antiliar would be the guys to ask. But the number is almot surely in the teens by now)

Buffalo: 11-15 (likely closer to 11)

Rochester: 6 or 7

Wiseguy listed the rest.

Chicago is probably around 14. A couple of those guys don't have a "smoking gun" source that confirms their membership but I feel pretty confident in saying that they are all made simply by virtue of their position or status. Bruno Caruso would be the only exception, as Anthony Granito testified that he was made but others testified that he was only an associate, so the FBI ran with that, although I have seen later newspaper articles identifying Bruno as made and using the FBI as a source, so who knows. I can no longer edit the charts post for Chicago or I could change it.

According to John Pennisi’s testimony, the Lucchese family operates with a total of seven crews – two in The Bronx, two on Long Island, one in Manhattan, one in New Jersey, and one Brooklyn crew which relocated to the Tottenville section of Staten Island

I don't think people realize how rare and valuable this info from Pennisi was. Especially nowadays. I mean, when was the last time the feds released a full layout of all the captains/crews in a given family? Or the last time someone like Gravano, D'Arco, or Vitale flipped and outlined their family's hierarchy for law enforcement?

People were a little surprised the present-day Luccheses were at 7 crews but my guess is it's reflective of all the NY families today, i.e. they have fewer crews than we are accustomed to thinking.

So Sal Marino And Tommy Novello in San Jose are not confirmed by FBI? Pretty sure in reality sal Marino is a member, but personally haven’t seen any confirmation aside from newspaper articles. And yes he is still alive
