Félix Séguin @felixseguin

Ce vendredi à 21h, J.E. vous présente une émission dont nous sommes assez fiers: des vidéos inédites de l’interrogatoire du co-chef de la mafia montréalaise Leonardo Rizzuto.

On y apprend beaucoup....

A few interesting takeaways from the article:

According to the police sources, the Rizzuto family once again are the most powerful and influential crime group in the province.

The core group consists of some 30 members and associates. (This doesn’t include members/associates of the other Montreal mob factions.)

The Rizzutos took advantage of the covid pandemic to seize practically full control over Montreal gambling activities. They and the HAs are also financing the construction of a casino on a nearby Indian reservation.

The number of members & associates seems realistic to me. Having said that, I still have trouble assessing the real status of the Rizzuto clan:

-A full-fledged Cosa Nostra group? This is what the newspapers and Canadian authorities consider them to be. In any case the word Mafia is used, even if sometimes it is often used wrongly, in particular by the press. That said we have no indications (unless I missed something) on the ceremonies performed and we can only guess which are the recognized members of Cosa Nostra (Vanelli, Mucci, Acardi and a few others).

- Still affiliated with the Bonannos? Morena's introduction to the guys mentioned above in my parenthesis may suggest so, despite the fact that at some point Montreal distanced itself from NY. I think particularly between 2004 and 2010 with the defections of Massino then when Nick Rizzuto sent Montagna to go to hell.

-An organized crime group that has become independent with former CN members in it? From my point of view they act as such anyway, although the other two options seem plausible to me as well.

I don't think we have an answer to these questions right away, because no one communicates about it.

Coming back to the article, interesting to note the position of Del Balso. Even though he had clearly been back in business since 2019, I thought he would be lower in the clan hierarchy. I wonder what Frank Acardi's position is at the moment.

Interesting that the article says sports betting is now their "most important" activity. That would be a major change.

motorfab,

As promised: https://www.tvanouvelles.ca//emissions/ ... 6210440001

Leonardo Rizzuto’s 6-hour interrogation appears to have been conducted entirely in English. The 30-minute episode actually has French subtitles for the scenes where he’s interrogated.
