Hi guys- I'm reading this book and I cannot figure out who the real names are and which are pseudonyms.
If you guys can tell me who the Gambino fake names are and Decalvacante fake names I would really appreciate that and think the other readers on here would benefit from that. Don't know enough about the Decav's to surmise who the fuck is who. I'm confounded by the Decavs and really confused about the players involved post Riggi. Any help or insight is appreciated.
Regards,
CB
Looks like all the DeCavalcante names are real except for Luca "Milk" Vitale. That is a reference to the recently deceased Joseph Merlo Jr.
Looks like most of the other names that have been posted here (I haven't read the book so don't about all of them) are also real except for the Gambino members Danny “Gooms” Bertelli and Nino Molinelli.

One thing I found really annoying, was how about every other page he talks about how he was worried he was being setup to be killed. Like every situation he describes he's talking about making sure he had a way out, or that his backup wasn't with him, or that he was always keeping an eye on some guy because he was worried he'd pull a gun and shoot him. Once or twice mentioning it is dangerous is okay. But I counted at least half a dozen times in just a couple chapters. Decavalcantes haven't killed anyone in 15 or so years at this point in time, so I get being wary, but calm down a little. Doubt you're high on list of potential mob hits.
Overall, I found it reads like a guy who really really really wanted to be Joe Pistone, but he was dealing with a bunch of losers 35 years after Pistone and had to talk it up. But, I'll read anything with a take on the more modern mob. Something from the streets in 2014-2015 I'm always going to read over another rehash of Gotti.
Pistone was also dealing with a bunch of losers. You should read Joe Massino's testimony about Pistone and Sonny Black. Massino says Sonny Black was killed for making a move to control the family. So all the bullshit over the years that Pistone was pushing that Sonny was killed because he took him around and proposed him is bullshit. Specially the cutting off of the hands. Read Massino's testimony is quite interesting. And another thing wtf is Pistone still wearing glasses to disguise himself. The crew that Pistone took down was very small. He just testified as an expert witness on mob trials around the country. He didn't lock up hundreds of guys.

What do you mean the cutting off his hands is bullshit? When they found his body hadn’t his hands been cut off? I don’t understand how it can be bullshit when it’s true and don’t you think Massino probably tried to downplay Pistone’s infiltration to make it seem like it was nothing? I mean Ruggiero was picked up by the fbi on his to getting whacked according to Pistone who doesn’t strike me as a liar.

Obviously Pistone's continuing claim of he put 100 mobsters away is silly. Like you said he was mostly an expert witness who was called in and he always counted those convictions. But, the guys he worked with were stone cold killers. And it was dangerous. Sonny Black, Lefty, Mirra......for the Decavalcante book, it just feels like the guy was trying to build up danger that really wasn't there.
The autopsy showed that his hands weren't cut off. He had lost parts of some fingers due to decomposition and that got spun in the media as his hands getting cut off.

Pistone did the audiobook for Donnie Brasco himself, and it’s easily one of the most awkward things I’ve ever listened to. Pistone reads the words like he’s reading them for the very first time. Like a kid who is a slightly below average reader that was called on to read something in class.
Also I thought it was interesting that he actually choked up when talking about Sonny Black on Franzese’s YouTube show.

Wasnt there also some discrepancy about how many times the body was shot
I have a vague recollection of that. Don't recall the details behind it.
