Early Torretta->NYC connections?
Torretta has become well-known because of the Gambino brothers, Lorenzo Mannino, and other "zips" from the 1970s/80s. Unlike Passo di Rigano you don't see it mentioned earlier on in US or Sicilian mafia history. Maybe there were more people from Torretta earlier on and their hometown was recorded as "Palermo" or it just didn't produce many early members.
Here are a few I've come across in NYC:
- Angelo Mannino (b. mid-late 1890s) and his sons Saverio "Sam" (b. 1922) and Ignazio "John" (b. 1925/1926) were ID'd by sources as members of the Gambino family. They were from Torretta, where Mannino is a common surname. These Manninos started in Lower Manhattan, later living in Queens and Long Island. Another son of Angelo, Vincent Mannino, might be the ILA lawyer who worked close with Albert Anastasia. Future Gambino captain Joe "Oxie" Marino was closely associated with Ignazio Mannino, who died young in 1957; Marino ended up with the Traina crew, so maybe these Manninos were also under Traina, not sure. Angelo Mannino's mother was a Marino, so maybe Joe "Oxie" could be a relative. Angelo also married a Rumore, another name connected to the Gambino family. Angelo may have died in 1975 while Sam died in 2004.
- When top Palermo boss Antonino Grillo accompanied Ignazio Lupo back to NYC from Sicily in 1922, Grillo was heading to a Francesco Zito in Brooklyn. Looks like Zito was from Torretta, if I found the right one. Most of the people Grillo had contact with in NYC were important mafia members connected to the future Gambino family, so Zito may have been affiliated with Lupo/D'Aquila. There were Zitos active in the 1980s with another Ignazio Mannino from Torretta.

Any other US names from there? Or historical info about the Torretta family in Sicily? Salvatore Davi was ID'd as the Torretta boss circa 1930s -- is he related to Pietro Davi?

He died November 1957, only in his early 30s.

Re: Early Torretta->NYC connections?
Interesting you bring this up however I maybe having names mixed up but you say angelo mannino passed away at a early age, murder? If I remember correctly Lorenzo Mannino cousin with the same name had a brother named Alberto or Angelo who was murdered in Torretta at a young age before immigranting to the US. Can it possibly be who you are stating? Also the same cousin had a brother Salvatore who did time in Detroit.
Nonetheless great job B. I always enjoy reading what you bring to the forum. In dept and super informative.

Re: Early Torretta->NYC connections?
good morning B. were the giamona's from that town, ? they had been in boss position way back i believe..thanks
Re: Early Torretta->NYC connections?
Hey there Bronx -- I think Leo Giammona was from Passo di Rigano. His ancestors were bosses of Passo di Rigano and Uditore.
Johnny -- it was Angelo's son Ignazio "John" Mannino who died young in NY. I can't find anything about it being murder. Would be good to know if they kept up ties to Sicily... Joe Oxie Marino hung out on 18th avenue with the Sicilians and attended the Bono wedding so maybe the Manninos were similar.

More on the Rumore relation:
- Angelo Mannino's father-in-law was named Saverio Rumore, from Bisacquino. The Rumores who were members in the Dongarra crew were Saverio "Sam" and Luigi "Louie" from Bisacquino and they lived on the same street in Manhattan as the Manninos and later moved to Astoria, Queens, like them as well. Sam Rumore was the eldest son, so his grandfather was likely named Saverio like him -- could his grandfather be Mannino's father-in-law? Would mean the Dongarra crew Rumores are nephews/cousins to the Manninos.
- If the Manninos are related to those Rumores, it could point to them also being with the Dongarra crew given they lived in the same areas the Dongarra crew operated. I see Hairy Knuckles had Sam Mannino with the Traina crew on his 1980s chart which fits the Joe Oxie Marino connection mentioned earlier, though.

ty B oxie was with mario traina ..became capo of that crew, but he was very close to joe arcuri
Re: Early Torretta->NYC connections?
Do you know where he lived in NYC?
Thinking he might be a cousin of the Manninos as their maternal relatives were named Marino. Would explain why they came up together.
