Italian Mafia loses Swiss aid to Covid

The Italian mafia has found ways to steal millions from Switzerland during the coronavirus pandemic, public broadcaster RTS reported on Wednesday.

"We found that the money allocated to companies as loans to help Covid goes very fast abroad," says Nicoletta della Valle, director of the Federal Police Department (Fedpol). "It is the banks that report these movements to us".

To date, the Fedpol Money Laundering Reporting Office (MROS) estimates that at least CHF180 million ($ 199 million) has been diverted from government loans to offset the financial damage of the coronavirus pandemic. This money is unlikely to return to Switzerland.

Anti-mafia law enforcement officials are also concerned that the Italian mafia could benefit substantially from European Union funds earmarked for Italy for the recovery of Covid (CHF220 billion). In Sicily, the powerful Italian trade organization Confcommercio claims that Cosa Nostra is about to take over the entire economy of the island.

Underestimated presence

The phenomenon remains difficult to be detected in Switzerland. But Fedpol speaks of multiple forms of crime: arms trafficking, human trafficking, drugs, counterfeit money, receiving stolen goods and money laundering.

"We underestimated this a long time ago," mainly because these crimes are prosecuted at the cantonal level, says della Valle. "We treated them, I would say, as normal crimes, and we did not see the mafia ties. And now, with time, after analyzing old records of criminal cases, we realized, for example, that it was not a homicide, but a crime. murder linked to the mafia ".

The police analysis helped to reveal the breadth and depth of the mafia's activities in Switzerland. Cantonal prosecutors confirmed to RTS that the cases of murder, fraud and arms trafficking in Zurich and Italian-speaking Switzerland suggest links to the Calabrian 'Ndrangheta'.

In Geneva, according to reports by RTS, the mafia has made inroads in the sectors of construction, drugs and money laundering.

"The presence of the Italian mafia in Switzerland dates back more than 40 years," says the head of Fedpol. "His former bosses came to Switzerland, to Thurgau, Biena and Bern. And now it's his grandchildren who are starting to do business, they are all over Switzerland. There are even mobsters who speak better Swiss German than Italian." .

Some media reports speak of 400 mafia-related people in Switzerland. But, according to RTS sources, this is just the tip of the iceberg.

To better understand the phenomenon of the Mafia in Switzerland, the University of Italian Switzerland opened an Observatory on Organized Crime on Wednesday.

Meanwhile you had mainstream outlets running articles saying that Cosa Nostra was all but done a few years ago. No doubt the Calabrian's have supplanted them as Italy's most powerful group, and they're nowhere near where they were in the 80s and 90s. Even still, one of the most sophisticated criminal organizations in the world.

During 1980's they were at peak of their power, today they are nowhere close to it , but they are still one of most powerful criminal organizations in the world, they are into literally everything that's going on in Sicily. If we are to 'compare' groups , 'Ndrangheta is more powerful , after war on state that Riina started , police was completely focused on Sicilians while Calabrians managed to grow almost unnoticed.

Sicilians also have strong connections to politicians, freemasonry, secret services etc. Especially Trapani , Iside 2 is one of most powerful masonic lodges in South Italy.

A psychopath, even by mob standards. Strangled a 12 year old boy and dissolved his body in acid. Blew up Falcone, his wife, and three officers. Killed who knows how many other people.

And now, not only is he free, he even gets out 45 days early.

If this doesn't show the sick mentality of western liberalism, I don't know what does.

No way he is ever doing that, that would be his end,he knows a lot of shit about some very powerful people. We still don't know the truth behind Falcone/Borsellino and all bombings, Riina was just used to carry out those attacks. 2 years ago during Stato-Mafia 'Ndrangheta trial , 4 people disappeared from witness protection program after they started talking about same 'sensitive' stuff.

It is actually not shocking. Italy, like many countries as a life sentence capped at 30 years. He got 2 convictions of 30 years to serve concurrently. He has become a collaborator and helped understand a lot of those years too, so he got 4 years discounted. He will live under conditional freedom for 4 years, so it seems pretty logical to me.

I mean its pretty much same here in Eastern Europe, if you get your car stolen for example , if you/or someone you know have organized crime connections you will call them instead of police, because they will always find it within a day.
