Apparently the saying used to go that Basilicata was “too poor to have a mafia”. Basilicata has long been a very impoverished and isolated region, with low population density and some very rugged terrain. The region had some very notable gangs of brigands going back to the Risorgimento period, but as the article posted above outlines, no real mafia, so far as is known, until about 30 years ago.

NP. While Basilicata did not have its own mafia tradition in the past, it’s worth noting that a good number of Chicago members were Lucani (mostly with roots in Potenza), including three bosses: Tony Capezio, Jack Cerone, and Phil Alderisio. There were many Lucani who settled in New York as well as Chicago, and I would imagine there have been members in the NY fams as well (the Genovese I would think for sure).

The hearing was in ‘84 and Accardo died in ‘92. He spent much of his time in Palm Springs during those years, however.

Did Paul Castellano really snitch on Frank Matthews? I know they were neighbors in Todt Hill Staten Island, so they lived next to one another. but did Big Paulie really ask an undercover cop to investigate Frank Matthews?

Did Joey's daughter Sophie or Sophia delete her ig? Might sound stupid question but I've posted some pictures of Joey that I got from her account on reddit and here and now her account is gone. Do y'all think they check r/mafia ?

Any current info on whether Larry Dentico and Mario Gigante are still alive?

Both would be 97.

Researchers?
