William Dauber: longtime FBI snitch?
James Catuara, an Outfit leader on the South Side, controlled a company called World Wide Mortgage. According to a 1964 FBI intelligence report, the company had four central employees: Guido Fidanzi, Gus Rubino, and two others who had their names redacted. According to the FBI, the two redacted employees were confidential informers. The FBI assigned one of the CI's the symbol code "CG 6700."

So who are the two employees who were talking?
It's a good bet one of them was William Dauber. An FBI intelligence report shows Dauber worked at World Wide Mortgage in 1964 and was a close associate of Catuara. He was described as Catuara's right hand man.

It's hard to say if Dauber was "CG 6700" or the other PCI. But if you search "CG 6700" on MF, another report comes up that tends to suggest whoever the informer was, he was involved in the rough stuff for the mob.

In 1966, "CG 6700" told federal agents that Clarence Forrest, a bartender at a club owned by Frank Laporte, had been killed by Louis Pratico and Marvin O'Shea. Laporte, Catuara's boss, accused Forrest of spying on him for the rival Fifi Buccieri group.
A few months after Forrest's murder, Pratico turned up dead in a ditch. "CG 6700" did not tell the FBI who killed Pratico, but he advised that Catuara had been ordered to kill him. Additionally, "CG 6700" implied he stole two cars for Catuara to be used for additional murders.
As a hitman and a close associate of Catuara, Dauber would be precisely the kind of person to be privy to incriminating information like this. Again, not a slam dunk, but it could be him.
I know Dauber talked to the ATF near the end of his life, but it wouldn't surprise me in the least to discover he dry snitched (at times) to the FBI much earlier.

You could teach a class on deductive reasoning.
I wonder how many guys gave info before their later, more well-known cooperation.
Ron Previte
Jimmy Fratianno
Joe Valachi
Bill Bonanno (I consider his books/etc. a form of cooperation)
Probably a lot of associates.

I agree that Billy Dauber is a very good guess for “CG 6700”.
Great work as always, Ed!

Re: William Dauber: longtime FBI snitch?
Yeah, it makes sense that he was dry snitching for years. Chuck Nicoletti dry snitched for a year or two before he was killed I believe. Chuckie English too. Possibly Ned Bakes, Ronald DeAngeles, and a long list of others. Leo Rugendorf provided a lot of information, and we recently discussed Frank Buccieri.
Re: William Dauber: longtime FBI snitch?
Fratianno definitely snitched earlier than he let on.
I'm always fascinated by mobsters who snitched while committing murder and mayhem. How much did their FBI handlers know or suspect? Did the FBI unintentionally create some of these monsters by providing them cover?
I recently unmasked an Outfit member who started talking in the early 1960s right through into the mid-1970s at least. He was allegedly involved in one of the Outfit's biggest hits. I'm keeping close to the vest right now until I figure out what to do with him.

Re: William Dauber: longtime FBI snitch?
Was Dauber killed because he had agreed to testify for the FBI and the Outfit found out? It wouldn't surprise me either if he was dry snitching on these guys - he not even from Chicago let alone Italian.
Re: William Dauber: longtime FBI snitch?
The Outfit experts can weigh in, but it's my understanding Dauber had fallen out with his old associates because of a dispute over money and power. As a result, he distanced himself from them and indicated he retired from the organization. Additionally, the Outfit suspected he was talking to the ATF, which he was. The organization had been trying to kill him for some time before it happened.

The account given in Coen’s “Family Secrets” book was that Dauber was pinched on a gun charge and thus began cooperating with the ATF. He may have beefed on Tocco, as a search warrant was issued on Tocco’s home in ‘79.
What did Nick say in the FS transcripts about it?

Great stuff Ed and I agree with B regarding the idea on you giving some classes on these stuff lol
I also agree that it was Dauber since he was threatened several times by Tocco to keep his mouth shut, and so yeah some of the Outfit guys were already aware regarding his big mouth.
Another interesting thing is that the World Wide Mortgage company wasnt the only fraudulent mortgage company which the Chi Heights group had at the time, but they also controlled the Consolidated Mortgage Corp in AZ and some hits occurred because of it...i think Nick D'Andrea was involved in one of those hits...i think he did the Ed Lazar and Jack West contracts...

Re: William Dauber: longtime FBI snitch?
I was waiting for the Chicago mack daddy to chime in. Do you know why Dauber initially fell out with Catuara after so many years and threw his lot in with Tocco?
I have no idea how much informing Dauber did, but I find it interesting how little prison time he did. I believe he did only a couple of years in the 1970s. I wonder how much protection or cover, if any, the FBI gave him. Newspaper accounts state he was a prolific killer.

Re: William Dauber: longtime FBI snitch?
It is possible that it was the other way around, meaning it is possible that Tocco and Dauber went all the way back to the early 60s or maybe even 1950s. By the mid or late 60s Catuara was a capo under LaPorte and so all of these guys such as Tocco and Dauber worked for him. The so-called "cold war" began when LaPorte died and Pilotto became his successor, while on the other hand Catuara allegedly expected that same position and so many guys chose different sides and Catuara obviously lost. I believe the main problem for Catuara was that he was an "import", meaning he wasnt "born" in the Chicago Heights Mob but instead he was from Chinatown and was also connected to people from Taylor St and Cicero like the Buccieri crew, and when he got out of jail during the 1940's, his first capo Jimmy Belcastro died and so Catuara transferred to the Chicago Heights crew, while Pilotto was "born" in that same crew. That was the difference between the two and I believe thats why most of the guys went with Pilotto, against Catuara.

These old neighbourhood ties matter, even years later. Thanks for the explanation.

Frank Bompensiero a criminal associate of Fratianno was also an informant for the FBI before he was killed by the mob. He knew Tony Spilotro from the Chicago Outfit and may have helped him in the murder of Tamara Rand according to this article.Ed wrote: ↑Mon May 10, 2021 5:32 am Fratianno definitely snitched earlier than he let on.

Yes, Bompensiero was a significant FBI informer. His symbol code was SD 1064 is you're interested in researching his secret meetings with federal agents at maryferrell.org.
