West Memphis Three. There were actually three of those Paradise Lost documentaries.
The Escobar film had a limited realese in the US June this year.

Why do the actors have to look like the characters? I never understood why that mattered to anyone.
For quite the obvious reasons. If an actor portrays a real-life figure I except some realism. Which is why I didn't care that Nickelson didn't look like Bulger, because he was playing a different character. Depp however IS Bulger.

Yeah, I don't care if an actor looks exactly like the character they are portraying, but I hate when they make a character way more dashing than he really was just to sell the movie. When I heard Depp was playing Bulger I thought it was going to be another Donnie Brasco case... i.e. them making the balding, 40-something Pistone into a heart throb. I was happy to see they made Depp look more like the disgusting old mick that Whitey really is.

I'm not as hard on non-Italian crime movies and I don't know a ton about the Patriarca crew, so I'm looking forward to checking this out. If it's entertaining that's good enough for me. Not sure if I'm alone, but I thought the Departed was a clusterfuck and I couldn't get into it so hopefully this does the job.
The movie has very little to do with Italian OC. It mainly focuses on the "media myth" that was created regarding James Bulger

Yea there is very little Italian OC in Black Mass.
If I didn't have my case coming up, I would like to come back with you gentlemen when this is over with and really lay the law down what is going on in this country.....
What I did find surprising is the portrayal of FBI agent John Connolly. They made his charachter out to be a a fast talking, hardcore Boston accent bumbling idiot. In everything I have ever read, Connolly was well spoken and while he did grow up in the housing projects of Southie, he really didn't know the Bulgers too well growing up. They made his relationship with Billy Bulger out to be a lifelong friendship.

Yep I seriously doubt Whitey knew who he was until he became an FBI agent and told him who he was, much less someone with the power Billy had at that time.

Although I've read quite a few books on the story, it didn't come across to me in any of the readings that Connolly was the "asshole" of the office, quite the contrary actually. That's Hollywood for yinz.

IN the Trailer there's a scene where 'Whitey' asks someone across the dinner table for a recipe and it launches into a direct rip off of Goodfellas 'Funny how?'
But its a well done rip off. Hell, one mans rip off is anothers tribute I guess.
Watching it right now. 20 mins in and it seems plagued with the same BS that American Gangster was saddled with: graying the line between cops and criminals. They make the criminals out to be these noble family men who care for their wives and teach their children manners whereas the cops are out drinking, having unhappy and broken families. I don't find this very appealing but that's just me.
So far, Black Mass seems to revolve around a bunch of a Southie Accents saying "Fuck me, fucks youse. You can go fuck ya'self, Tommy." It's the mick version of This Thing Of Ours. Like I said I'm only 20 mins in...
Not a classic, but it's still good. It stayed true enough to the real story and never verged into campiness, as some mob movies with much smaller budgets seem to do. The story really benefited by having good actors and a big budget to get behind it.
I'll buy it, but chances are it becomes unfindable and I definintely wouldn't it more and more like I do with The Departed. I know it's WAY off but close enough.

Just watched it. Pure entertainment. I liked it.
What's with making Depp's eyeballs look like he's got albino eyes?
After reading Citizen Somerville, you realize none of these guys had their shit together. One truth about the movie was the FBI really opened the doors for Bulger's crew to dominate for a bit.
why is pure fiction ?
i saw yesterday the movie and yes i appreciated that but it seems the D'angiulo was idiots while he was the boss of Boston
I think the he replys anyway at the italians
