Interesting story I was reading in one of the FS intercepts. Doyle was telling Calabrese Sr about the time Jimmy LaPietra and Johnny Apes beat Frank Roti with a .45 and cracked his skull. My impression of Caruso has been that he was a rather weak or uninspired capo. If it was true that Ange had to beg him for Jimmy’s life, than he may have been tougher than I’d thought. It’s also possible, of course, that Caruso’s claim that he didn’t care for Frank Roti was just a cover for not wanting to retaliate against Buccieri’s guys.

If Bruno Roti were alive, I doubt Jimmy Lap and and Apes would’ve pulled that shit in the first place.

Same thoughts here, meaning i always looked at Caruso as weak or not having much ambitions. When he took over from Roti Sr, he was labelled as being far from what his predecessor previously was. On top of that we can see convos between Caruso and Marcy, or Caruso and Alex and again, he seemded like weak individual.

Maybe during the 70s he received more seniority within the organization but the problem was that during those days the old South Side faction was almost gone.

Anyone ever came across some info regarding LaPietras crew making problems around Carusos area before the official takeover? After all, LaPietra inherited all of Carusos members....

In addition if we look at Caruso's career while being a capo for the Outfit, he never did any long prison term which is something to think about regarding his respect and status within the Outfit in later years...another thing to note is that he took a step back in 77/78, allegedly out of health reasons, and died 5 or 6 years later....what was Carusos status when he took a step back?

I haven't looked into "Twan" Doyle's background, but he was born Anthony Passafiume and changed his surname to fit in with the Irish. He started out as a sanitation worker. Obviously he went way back and had a lot of inside information. Chicago is pretty unique in having police officers not just working for the Outfit, but becoming part of it.

I saw in a file from the late eighties that a sheriff's deputy from Melrose Park was a made guy. I cannot think of who this could be.

The Irish of course dominated the CPD as well as many of the city services departments, and were notorious for discriminating against the Italians and Polish, etc. So the name change may have been a career move, but I wonder if it also had the benefit of distancing him from being suspected for his Outfit connections.

Doyle died in prison in 2011, am I correct on that? If I have the right guy, he was full Sicilian, born 1945 to Anthony Passafiume and Mary Castrogiannani. He grew up on 24th Pl in Chinatown very near to the LaPietras, Annerinos, etc. His father’s family went back to Termini Imerese (yet again!) and his mother’s family I believe to Nicosia, Enna. Given his paternal lineage I wonder if he had old mafia heritage. I can’t confirm it but see some reason to suspect that he may have additionally had some familial link to some Annerinos.

I’m sure this has been poster before. This is from 2010. Two top guys are federal informants. One since 1994 and the other since 1985. To me, it’s to big of a coincidence. 1994 is the year Difronzo got out on appeal after being convicted for the Indian casino indictment. Carlisi never got out. What about the one since 1985? Peter Difronzo, Joe the builder??? I guess you have to look at who has had no legal issues. Those two are two candidates. Fratto and Mattasa would be other but they all both have had indictments in the last 10 years. Or maybe the FEDs just planted this story to get everyone paranoid. They were really looking to do a family secrets part two but it never developed.
