Frank Cali + Gambino Family info 2000s

Post by JohnnyS »

  • Frank Cali is said to have a "significant position" in the family and is acting captain for acting boss John D'Amico.
  • Frank Cali tells Michael DiLeonardo in a conversation that was taped on November 27th 2002 that John Rizzo has been promoted to the administration. Cali sent Pete Inzerillo to go see Rizzo and ask what was going on as Cali had seen Consigliere Joseph Corozzo and Captain Anthony Meagle and wasn't told about Rizzo's promotion. Cali also mentions that he hasn't really been talking to Rizzo.
  • DiLeonardo tells Cali that JoJo Corozzo made the move to put Rizzo up and guys like Corozzo are "bad guys" and Cali should "run for the fucking hills"
  • Pete Inzerillo heard from John Rizzo that Meagle told him about his promotion and not Joseph Corozzo. Arnold Squitieri, who is referred to as the former street boss was thrown off the administration.
  • Cali offers to arrange a meeting between DiLeonardo and Rizzo.
  • In January 2006, Captain Michael Paradiso tells close associate Frank Romano that he urgently needs to get in touch with either John D'Amico or Joseph Corozzo. Paradiso instructs Romano to get in touch with Frank Cali because it's Cali "that has to get in touch with the administration" Paradiso says he would rather meet with Corozzo than D'Amico.
  • A Gambino associate is intercepted talking about a Florida based soldier who is under Cali.
  • Soldier Joseph Orlando is recorded complaining about Frank Cali. Orlando calls Cali "Jackie's guy" and "some snot-nosed, 30 year old kid."
  • Frank Cali is said to have many made members and associates who were born in Italy in his crew. Cali is viewed as a man of power and influence by organized crime members in Italy.
  • In October 2005, Cali's close associate Frank Inzerillo called Frank Romano to set up a meeting between Cali and Paradiso. Cali refused to talk on the phone to other members and would only talk in person. In a call with Romano, Paradiso refers to Cali as "the fruit guy" Cali and Paradiso later meet in a park across from Hunter's steak house in Brooklyn. Cali is overheard telling Paradiso travel directions to a meeting at a later date. Two days later, Law Enforcement observe Paradiso's car on Hamilton avenue by the Red Hook terminal. Three and a half hours later, they observe Paradiso exiting Cali's vehicle and leave. Law Enforcement then follow Cali to a restaurant in Manhattan where he meets with acting boss John D'Amico, acting underboss Domenico Cefalu and Domenico Cefalu's son who is a soldier. Law Enforcement then observe the four engage in a conversation for an hour and a half in the street before Cali, D'Amico and the older Cefalu leave in Cali's car.
  • In 2007, Law Enforcement observe Cali meeting with Domenico Cefalu on at least three occasions in Brooklyn.
Some random background info on Cali.
  • Cali lived his entire life in Brooklyn and Staten Island.
  • Cali had no arrests whatsoever before he was indicted in 2008. Cali has two brothers in law, Pete Inzerillo and Daniel Inzerillo. Daniel is the youngest. Cali does indeed have a brother who lives on Staten Island. (around the time of Cali's death there was an article that stated Cali's brother was a made member)
  • Cali was the president and part owner of Bontel a successful Brookln based company that imports food and wine. Cali is described by employees of that company as a "kind and caring boss" Cali had to resign as president of the company because of his arrest.
  • Cali then started a food and cardboard packaging company.
Other random notes
  • Ernest Grillo was under Cali.
  • In the 2008 takedown, Leonard DiMaria was named as an "alleged member of the administration" alongisde John D'Amico.
  • Frank Inzerillo was described as a "conduit" for Cali and his father is a made member of the Italian Mafia.
  • Joseph Scopo and Robert Epifania were under Thomas Cacciopoli.

Great stuff Johnny. Interesting that Squiteri lost his position for a brief period. Turns out it was referenced in his indictment and
I missed it. So was Rizzo the Acting Boss for a time before Squirieri was put back in?

After being released from prison in or about March 1999, SQUITIERI was made Underboss of the Gambino Organized Crime Family, the second highest-ranking position in the Family, by John J. Gotti, the former Boss of the Family. Following the arrest of Gambino Family Boss Peter Gotti on racketeering charges in June 2002, SQUITIERI became Acting Boss Of the Gambino Organized Crime Family, a position he has held during much of the time relevant to this Indictment.

Looks like Megale was never Capo.

b. ANTHONY MEGALE, a/k/a “Mac,” a/k/a

“Machiavelli,” was, at various times relevant to this Indictment, a Soldier and Acting Underboss in the Gambino Organized Crime Family. MEGALE became Acting Underboss of the Gambino Organized Crime Family at or about the time that ARNOLD SQUITIERI was elevated from Underboss to Acting Boss.
Accordingly, following the incarceration of the Gambino Family’s Boss Peter Gotti, in or about the second half of 2002, Gambino Organized Crime Family Underboss ARNOLD SQUITIERI became the Acting Boss of the Gambino Organized Crime Family. At or about the same time, Gambino Organized Crime Family Soldier ANTHONY MEGALE assumed the
position of Acting Underboss. In many respects, MEGALE operated as what is sometimes referred to as a “street boss” for SQUITIERI because of SQUITIERI’s concerns about meeting with other LCN members and associates while on parole for a prior narcotics conviction.

Nice find it seems like he did lose his position. I'm not sure if Rizzo was acting boss or what happened he's listed as a captain in the document. Also, didn't DiLeonardo say in the forum Q&A that he told D'Amico before he cooperated to take Rizzo down and put Cali in as acting? Reading between the lines of the conversation with Cali, it sounds like DiLeonardo thought it was a power play by Corozzo.

Megale is listed as a captain so that's interesting he wasn't listed as such in the indictment. Wasnt Sciandra acting for Thomas Gambino at that time? I doubt Megale was a capo of a different crew so that could be a mistake.

This is the park with 'the cannon' where Amuso and Casso used to meet.

Great post Johnny, keep'em coming.

Yes I think he did say that. And yeah Sciamdra was Acting for Tommy Gambino at this time. The above was the 2005 indictment resulting from the Jack Falcone infiltration. Megale was also indicted in 2004 in a separate case and that indictment makes no mention of him being a Capo either. I think DiLeonardo just assumed he was a Capo since he ran the Connecticut rockets and had made guys answering to him.

Wow all the places they could meet...

There's other stuff from Cali's sentencing. Nothing too interesting though just stuff like Frank Inzerillo putting up property for Cali's bail, Cali told the judge he had next to nothing in his bank accounts but had shit loads of money in property and was building a multi million home (go figure) He didnt own a car as he sold it after he was indicted, Cali broke his thumb playing basketball in a Queens detention facility and could need surgery.

And just to clarify, Pete Inzerillo was identified as a soldier in 2002. No name of the Florida based soldier that was in Cali's crew. Anyone have any guess on who that could be?

Didn’t Cali have a guy (or guys) down in Florida who had contacts with a drug cartel in Latin America? Can’t remember if they were supposed to be a Mexican cartel, or Colombian, or whatever.

I'm assuming this is the tiny triangle "park" down in Bay Ridge where 4th/5th Ave and 95th St meet?

Roberto Settineri? Sicilian mob associate from Palermo he was associated with Cali. He attended John Ruggerio's funeral in 2008.

And from I think I've figured out who the soldier was. Gaetano Napoli. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/mafia-susp ... -italy-us/

From Mob Boss: The Life of Little Al D’Arco, the Man Who Brought Down the Mafia
On Sunday of Memorial Day weekend, Casso called Al and told him he needed to see him immediately. He said he'd be waiting for him by "the cannon". It was their shorthand name for the small park at the foot of Fort Hamilton Parkway in Bay Ridge beneath the soaring Verazzano-Narrows span to Staten Island.

Yeah the park with the cannon is John Paul Jones Park, which is all the way down at 101 and 4th, under the Verrazzano. The tiny little "pocket park" across from Hunter's is (IIRC) Ft Hamilton Triangle.

Good call Tony you're def right. No one in there right mind would describe three benches and a statue as a park...that's what threw me off.

The Napolis were one of the original Pizza connection families, along with all the usual suspects, Inzerillos, Adamitas, Spatolas, Manninos, Cefalus, Gambinos, ect......

They were in the Venezuelan corporate structures set up by the Inzerillo/ Rizzuto consortium too....

It would make sense if he coordinated the traffic to Sicily for Cali.
