ANSA) - ROME, FEB 2 - Carabinieri police on Tuesday detained 22 people in a big operation targetting Sicily's Stidda mafia clans, sources said.
The operation was linked to an investigation which revealed that fugitive Cosa Nostra boss Matteo Messina Denaro is still recognised as the leader who decides who is promoted or demoted in the Sicilian Mafia, despite having been on the run since 1993.
It also showed that relations between the American and Sicilian mafias were never broken off, A criminal lawyer whose offices were allegedly used for meetings of mafia bosses was among the people arrested.
According to the probe, two lifers who had obtained semi-libety were in charge of reorganizing the Stidda; Italy's fifth mafia after 'Ndrangheta from Calabria, Cosa Nostra from Sicily, the Camorra from Naples and the Sacra Corona Unita from Puglia.
The lifers also allegedly exchanged messages with bosses being held under the tough 41 bis jail regime. (ANSA).

Ah this is nothing new really! it's about public works - the recovery fund is nothing special in this sense, the problem remains public work in Italy (added crisis), nothing to do with EU!

Cosa Nostra in the black traffic of luxury watches: 15 precautionary measures. "An exponent of the Fontana sold them to VIPs and footballers in Milan"

According to Repubblica, Giovanni Fontana was known in Milan as a watch dealer and was intercepted by the financiers of the special currency police unit while talking on the phone with several footballers (not under investigation). Investigators have ascertained that the clan has reinvested large financial resources in the sector, largely deriving from the criminal activity carried out in the area

The hands of Cosa Nostra in the luxury watch trade. A market that from Palermo reached Rome, Milan and London. This is what was ascertained by the investigation coordinated by the Palermo prosecutor's office which led to the execution of 15 precautionary measures: Giovanni Fontana ended up in handcuffs, considered by the investigators to be an exponent of one of the historic families of the Palermo mafia. According to what Repubblica reports, he was known in Milan as a watch dealer and was intercepted by the financiers of the special currency police unit while talking on the phone with various players: in the papers the names of Marco Borriello, formerly of the national team, are mentioned and of the former Palermo player Andrea Rispoli. His brother, Angelo Fontana, would have discussed watches with Lele Mora, the former VIP agent. Clients, unaware of the black traffic that investigators believe was behind the two brothers' business, are not being investigated.

According to the investigation, therefore, the Cosa Nostra would have reinvested large financial resources in the sector largely deriving from the criminal activity carried out in the area. The business was intended for wealthy customers, in some cases also resident abroad. Investigators have ascertained the role of the Fontana family, historically hegemonic in the Palermo neighborhoods of Acquasanta and Arenella of the Resuttana mafia district and partly moved to Milan. In fact, the new justice collaborator Gaetano Fontana contributed to the investigation. There are 15 suspects in total: one ended up in prison, 11 are under house arrest and 3 have been notified of the ban on expatriation and the obligation to report to the judicial police. The charges are variously those of personal aiding, money laundering, self-laundering, with the aggravating circumstance of the transnational crime and of having favored the Cosa Nostra. As part of the operation that led to the arrests, the yellow flames carried out the seizure of the assets and business complex of a jewelry store in Milan, a gold purchase in Palermo and financial contributions for 2.6 million euros. The blitz was conducted in Sicily, Lombardy, Piedmont, Tuscany and Friuli Venezia Giulia.

According to the investigators, the watch market was based on the collaboration of operators in the sector at the helm of “buy-gold” shops in London, Milan, Rome and Palermo. The measures of these hours actually fit into the path already marked by the military of the yellow flames with an investigation last May, when the mafia clan that commands in the Palermo neighborhoods of Acquasanta and Arenella was hit once again. On that occasion, 90 subjects ended up in handcuffs on charges of mafia association, extortion, drug trafficking, fraudulent transfer of values, money laundering, reuse of illicit capital, illegal gambling and betting.

Question for mafia experts in Italy: I read that the Grecos of Ciaculli/Croceverde had relatives in Calabria members of the 'Ndrangheta. I know Greco is a fairly common name in Italy, but could this Giuseppe Greco be a relative to the Grecos of Sicily ? https://www.approdocalabria.it/giornale ... -in-corso/
