The math on that number is staggering. 4% of your house value, you have to pay to the government, every year. Every 25yrs in perpetuity you are paying off your mortgage again and again, to the government. You need to earn almost $70k a year, every year, purely for your property taxes, again, in perpetuity. And that $70k a year? ALL of it goes to the government.
With interests rates at near zero, imagine the money you would need in savings to pay that figure in interest.

A $1million dollar house isn’t for the super rich. A household income of $200-250k should be looking in that range, that’s 100-125k per partner. Not rich AT ALL. That’s mid level profession. A lot of cops earn that, doctors way more.

Do the math in the unaffordability of the house now.

For perspective that’s TEN TIMES the average rate in Canada. Ten times. And we’re talking Canada. A left country.

This is a perfect example of how government just grows and grows and gets massively out of control.

It would be 4% I think because the house is worth a million. Pretty sure Long Island and NJ have much higher property taxes in comparison.

There shouldn't be property taxes on primary homesteads period. It is a form of extortion which in effect negates the idea of private property.

It was a Sopranos qote, but interesting math nervertheless. Here in norway i dont pay that tax. Also, 125k in Norwegian money is considered like really good! One mill in our currency is about 100k usd. And the average pay here is 50k usd a year, which can give you a pretty decent life.

You’re right tall. When i tell people in norway about US society, which they are really ignorant about, they dont believe their ears. Its the insurance thing that baffles me. I’m told parents are even afraid of sending their kids to soccer practice in case they break a leg and have to pay a fortune. Is it true?
