The timing just seems weird.

So, off topic. But what connections to Calabria and the 'Ndrangheta did the Violi's have? Was it directly to the Luppinos in Toronto?

A Luppino also married into the Commisso family.

I'm reading Mafia Inc. (I'm sure you have all read it so I am late to the game), but it seems like Desjardens and Vito were very close with regards to the drug trade. Whether it be in travels to Milan or importing hashish into Canada. I knew Desjardens was in there, but didn't realize he worked direct with Vito like that. For a non-italian, wouldn't that place him rather high up in the totem poll of the Montreal Mafia?

He is also the brother-in-law of Jos Di Maulo (killed in 2011). He also accompanied Di Maulo & Violi as driver during a meeting to elect the new boss of the Bonanno Crime Family in the early 70s (73 if I remember correctly), at the time Philip Rastelli.

In fact the Montreal mafia does not really care about where people come from, that's why guys like Desjardin, Alevizios or Fernandez were considered members. A bit like Chicago Outfit with Gus Alex the Guziks or other non Italians.

That second paragraph is what I was referring to in the past. It is like a hybrid mafia org. While the core membership is italian, they rely on non italians too much more so than others.

there have always been powerful non-italians in all families, such as joe gallo's bodyguard for example and many others
