The Decavs these days to the best of my knowledge only really have Mimmo Marzullo in the immediate Newark area (Montclair/Newark) . He had a coffee shop on Bloomfield Ave in Newark , don’t know if its still there in 2020 as the last time I was there was back in 2013 when I was living on Bloomfield Ave back then.

The Philly North Jersey crew was traditionally based in the Ironbound (Downneck) area of Newark but have really gravitated out to the Newark suburbs and are really just a big bookmaking/shy operation these days.

That maniac Servidio was the exception and not the norm selling drugs in that crew. He actually moved out of the Newark Area (Nutley) and was operating/living deep down in South Jersey after he got out of prison for the coke charges he got hit with in 2006 in Nutley.

In the General broader Newark Area, The Decavs are really centered in Elizabeth and the towns right outside Elizabeth like Linden. Hope this makes sense to everyone.

I was wondering about Newark in particular, and historically. No doubt it's Genovese today but I'm interested in what kind of historical presence that the Luccheses and Philadelphia have had in the region and how their rackets matched up with what the Genovese had.
I mean from my geographical knowledge, there wasn’t a ton of money to be made in the north jersey area compared to what’s in Southern Jersey (Atlantic City). I think Genovese had the most influence for a long time because of the whole Angelo Bruno thing.. a power play by the Genovese Family to take over the more profitable Southern Jersey. I think major moneymakers were blue collar crimes since Northern Jersey is poorer than Southern Jersey.

The reason I ask is because I'll read articles claiming various families being the dominant presence here. Most say that the Genovese Jersey faction is the most powerful, however I've read some that say the Lucchese Jersey Crew is. Some say Philadelphia is the strongest in Newark. I've even seen some people say the DeCavs ran Newark although I'm sure they were falsely comparing them to the fictional Sopranos.

Anyhow, I was wondering if anyone had a breakdown or timeline of who was the most powerful in Newark. Or was it traditionally shared with each family dominating different rackets?
Genovese has the biggest presence in Newark. Lucchese Family used to run floating Casino's up and around Bloomfield ave between the parkway and Dickie Dees(best Italian hot dog on the planet made with fesh bread from calandra bakery down the st) I'm sure they still do. They made a few Perna's in the last 15yrs. But allot of guys have died off/ Not a very big crew like it was in the 80s. Belleville Gambino Crew is dead. Andy has a few guys but he is really based out of Morris County too. Philly Crew is very small and I don't even think Licata is that active anymore. Hes up there in age. The big guy who got out a few yrs ago probably runs what is left. Allot have died off. Colombos haven't been around Newark since the late 80s early 90s. You can literally say that the Genovese Family has a crew or two that operates in Newark city limits. Down Neck and the Port. In the 70s and 80s. You had crews from all families actually in Newark operating Down Neck and Forrest Hills section. All of that has died off accept for the west side presence DownNeck.

Wiseguy wrote: Sun Nov 22, 2020 6:55 pm There isn't even an argument that's open to opinion. It's been the Genovese since the early years. That's simply a fact. Who is even saying it could be the Luccheses, DeCavalcantes, or Philly?

The Genovese family has traditionally had at least a few crews based in the state. In the past, the other NY families only had one crew each based there. Today, I think there's evidence that the only other NY family crew based in Jersey is the Lucchese crew.
No Gambino crew anymore?
From what I gathered from a waterfront report that came out a few years ago, the Gambinos and Bonannos have activity there but no crews based there.
All roads lead to New York.

As a tangential question. The Elizabeth/Linden area has historically had a large Polish population (I have a bunch of family still around Union County). Anyone know if the DeCavs or other families in NJ ever had any known Polish associates?

Apologies to Grouch, not trying to divert the thread.

thanks Rocco. In the 80's or so...who had more guys in your opinion? ...Gambinos or Luchese's?

late 80s the Lucchese Family. Mid to early 80s toss up..earlier you go the leans towards the Gambinos. The 70s the Gambino's. Back in the 70s you had multiple Newark area Gambino's crews some were around the port exorting Trucking Co's and other venders and just city area loansharking ,gambling dens etc. By the early 90s the Gambinos were pretty depleted in NJ compared to the 60s and 70s. Philly Newark crew, Genovese and what was left of the Lucchese's picked up allot of the Gambling and Loansharking in the 90s thru today. Gambino's never really had a true comeback in NJ. You had Merola's crew but its pretty depleted and I believe he only had 1 other made guy(Buddy) busted with him. Buddy was one of the last surviving made guys in Cabert's Belleville crew. Its died out. Merola is out now I believe on restrictions..

Great breakdown thanks Rocco. Newark/North Jersey is so interesting. 7 families with multiple Genovese and Gambino crews. It must have been like the wild west in the 60 and 70s.

- Lucchese crew operated from social clubs in East Orange, New Jersey during Anthony Delasco and Michael Taccetta leadership. They also controlled rackets from Newark’s West Ward and gambling operations from Bloomfield Ave. In May 1982, Michael Taccetta setup a headquarter from the “Hole in the Wall” luncheonette in the Down Neck (Ironbound) section of Newark.
* The Boys from New Jersey: How the Mob Beat the Feds By Robert Rudolph (book goes into details of the power of the Lucchese's Jersey crew)

- I agree the Genovese family has always been the most powerful family in New Jersey controlling the docks and with multiple capos and crews. Top members of the Genovese family underboss and consigliere were from New Jersey. The Genovese family controls Hudson county, the Newark docks, Bergen county, a crew was in Newark.
*In 2009 a Genvoese gambling crew operating from Bloomfield was busted.

- Bonanno I think have one crew in Jersey Bayonne but nothing in Newark.

- Philly Newark crew run by Joseph "Scoops" Licata

- Gambino family soldier Nicholas "Nicky Skins" Stefanelli (later killed himself) who interacted with several organizations and regular at mob-linked bars and social clubs along Bloomfield Avenue in and around Newark, N.J., and did business with wiseguys from New York and New Jersey, and with a Newark-based crew of the Philadelphia crime family.
