LCN boss Frank Balistrieri- Proffer agreement

Post by Ed »

Maybe this is old news but I'd never heard about this.

In 1986, Milwaukee Crime Family boss Frank Balistrieri approached authorities with a proposal to cooperate. The deal was Balistrieri would debrief with FBI agents and tell them everything he knew, in exchange (it seems) for being transferred to a federal prison closer to home. He was already serving prison time for an earlier conviction for casino skimming.

Anyone know what became of this? Did it go through?

page 625 of part 1 of Balistrieri's FBI file.

Milwaukee LCN was pretty much dead by 1986 but he could have given up interesting historical information about the crime family. He also probably had a great deal to share about the Chicago Outfit.

I'd like to know his side of brasco incident. Why did he just drop off??
Wouldn't mafia protocol pretty much make this situation impossible??? This is one of the stories I never knew what to think of bc heres donnie dealing w a BOSS who all of a sudden drops outta sight w his dealings w one of the five families..... and the Bonannos never went to him separately to say "hey frank, what happened?"???

Pistone acted like balasteri was this boss that was ruthlessly going to kill him . Etc.
HANG IT UP NICKY. ITS TIME TO GO HOME.

Balistrieri also explored the possibly of writing a book about his life (ala Joe Bonanno) later on in 1991.

It's a new morning in America... fresh, vital. The old cynicism is gone. We have faith in our leaders. We're optimistic as to what becomes of it all. It really boils down to our ability to accept. We don't need pessimism. There are no limits.

I think one of his sons is still alive, maybe he could pull a "Bill Bonanno" and write a memoir based on what his father and grandfather told him about the mob.

To Everyone: WOW! I am truly SHOCKED at this revelation! As familiar as I am with the subject matter, and the legions of "dry snitches" , both made and associated, documented over the decades in the FBI records (as seen on Mary Ferrell site), I still get surprised when certain individuals are "outed" as informers or possible informers. I wonder how many Mafiosi have stayed true to their oath.

Word on the street is his son John is in the process of writing a book about his wife. His wife stated that.

I’ll be honest. I’m shocked if this is true. His reputation as a hard core mafioso was known across the country. I don’t know how he could have benefited from the agreement considering all the murders he ordered. And all he wanted was to be moved to a federal prison in Kentucky from Pennsylvania. Sounds like he might have been trying to play the government. I do know his health was bad and he might have had Alzheimer’s or dementia in his last years. I’m not positive about that and might be confusing it with someone else. Maybe someone else can confirm that or not.

You may be mixing him up with Carlos Marcello regarding the dementia thing because I know that has been well documented. Maybe it has with Balistrieri as well but I don't remember ever seeing that.

I think you're 100% on the money that he was trying to play the government to a certain extent and that's why he wasn't able to come to an agreement with them. He was probably trying to give them some chickenshit rackets or old out-dated info when they would clearly be much more interested in the murders that he knows about.

Here's an interesting article from Dec 1986 about his sons distancing themselves from him, after they thought he was going to testify on their behalf:
