Nah, Pete has always been a hide...take a shot...run and hide again type of guy. Direct confrontation isn't his style.

Anyway, he'd probably be hard pressed to give examples or even explain where or how I've "blown my load" over Chin. All I've ever done is what I said above - recognizing the guy's certain leadership abilities. The feds did the same thing, even having a grudging respect for his ability to elude them for so many years. But they (and I) certainly never admired or identified with the guy, forgot what he ultimately was, or thought the guys that flipped on him were somehow worse than he was.

Americans have always loved the outlaws, generations grew up wanting to be Jesse James, very few wanted to be the Pinkerton Agent. In the 20's America loved the gangsters, not because of what they really are but to a vast many what they represented. With the help of the newspapers and Hollywood news reels, they were made to be people who thumbed their nose at the government, lived life by their own rules, and represented a lifestyle that could take it too the big mean government which is oppressing the little guy. The mafia is the Jesse James or Bonnie and Clydes of the past. To many they represent a lifestyle with the ultimate freedom, when your working 60 hours a week and just getting by and you see a group of people doing it their way (this of course is perception) and they are appearing to be living large, the avg guy looks at that with admiration, because they long for that freeness but don't have the courage (for lack of a better word) to do so in their own lives. So people will identify with certain Mafioso because they have a personality or charisma that resonates with their "the little guy" mentality. Its the freedom of fantasy, because when the fantasy is stripped away, and reality is exposed, they are soon forgotten. Gotti had a mystic that resonated with the little guy, here he was living his life out in the open, thumbing his nose at the government and beating them. When the reality of Gotti was exposed, when the truth of what he really did to live that life, how he beat the government by tampering with the jury came out his mystic disappeared and he died as just an old guy with cancer.

And you would have to be totally delusional or just plain ignorant of the real life mob to believe that. That's one thing I've always liked about Scorseses Goodfellas and Casino. Sure, they live high early on but it all comes crashing down at the end. Eventually the devil gets his due.

These guys were intelligent, business wise and very capable of running large organizations in a tough environment. Perhaps admiration isn't the right word, or perhaps our interpretation differ, but I've made my point.

yeah, we are able to bust balls and have a good time here, that's why alot of people enjoy posting here as opposed to the other 2 much shittier mob forums. the thing is, "busting balls" usually applies to people who are on somewhat friendly terms with each other. when there are issues that have gone on for years and these types of sniping shots are thrown out, it gets old after a while. disagree with the position, not the poster. we also have a poopy diaper section of the forum in case things get heated, feel free to make use of it.

Most of the mob guys getting discussed on these forums are the ones we know about, lowlifes and scum. Those are the guys making the headlines. You´re right, one would need to be delusional or ignorant admiring Testa, Senter, Pitera, DiStefano or others of that lowlife, scum kind. But just like in sociaty in general, also the Mafia had its wide spectrum of individuals. Plenty of members we never heard of (or only know name of) who took their oath seriuosly, never made any headlines, never rebelled, never made a fuss, guys who were disciplined and loyal and stayed true to their code and their sense of honor. And THAT´S admirable, The individuals though (coming from our perspective) should not be admired.

Very well put, Hairy. You have to give it to the guys who took it seriously (even if they were few and far between). But you don't want them in your life .
