Campos et al Status Hearing From January

Post by mafiastudent »

I posted this up in the appropriate files thread (57-page doc attached) but wanted to give a heads up here:

This is actually pretty interesting. 57 pages of the Government arguing about defendants' access to discovery material while on home confinement to prepare for case. Plus their arguments on why Campos' dad (who was also indicted) shouldn't be allowed to visit his son and grandchildren (which judge allowed). And some other stuff on the Govt not wanting to let one of the guys go to work even though the arraignment judge approved it.

The government also wanted the case to be assigned to another judge. I think I read in another document that this judge is married to AUSA Edelman's father but they don't know each other. There was a relation letter filed but it's sealed. Defense wants the judge to stay as is. Easier to just upload it than try to make an article out of it because it's good reading.

This was right before Government tried to get Campos' bail revoked while he was at his daughter's doctor appointment.

You're welcome. I thought it was interesting as well. I don't think the government wanted to change judges because the judge was married to Edelman's father (that wasn't in that document..I'll pull that one) but because she's actually being fair and impartial. She really weighed both sides of all the issues which I don't think the government appreciated. So, I think if the case goes to trial, it's going to be an interesting one. There's supposed to be another status hearing in September but depending on what happens with Covid, it might change.

Yes....in reading it as a narrative, she comes across as very fair and both concerned and willing to work through issues that are of import to both sides.
