Donnie Brasco “guarding” Galante meeting?

Post by Uncle Pete »

It’s been a while since I’ve read Pistone’s first book but does anyone recall the context behind the Carmine Galante meeting that he and Lefty stood body guard outside for?

Pistone mentions this event often in interviews but I don’t know any other details about who Galante was meeting with. I’ve seen him refer to the event as standing guard outside or showing up to protect the boss but was that really what it was about? And protect Galante from who? Did Galante typically have a lot of guys posted up outside? As we’ve seen in other events showing up to a meeting with a lot of guys could also be a show of force to whoever Galante was meeting with. Given Galante’s reputation, maybe this event was Galante wanting to intimidate whoever he was meeting with by showing up with an army of his guys standing outside.

Just looked at my copy: Pistone says that he and Lefty stood guard outside Casa Bella, Mike Sabella’s restaurant. The particular story is that Galante was meeting with Sabella and a few other guys. They probably stood guard at that restaurant because Lefty was in Sabella’s crew.

Thanks for checking, do you know if Sabella was aligned closely with Galante at this time? Do you know where he stood with Rusty? I’m just wondering if maybe there was more to this meeting than a normal sit down given the number of guys involved and the moves Galante was making at the time

He was a top Galante loyalist. He was going to be killed after Galante was whacked but he got a pass and was just demoted to Soldier.

Pistone writes like he and Lefty stood guard multiple times, so it was probably more run of the mill, checking in meetings

Reminds me of when poster Angelo ("Forrest Gump of the mob") claimed he stood guard outside a meeting for (was it Accardo?) in Chicago. I think this was when he had fled New York while on the run from Casso. Good times.

Yeah, he posted on the RD and even before that. He was quite the story teller. He literally spanned the entire country, from New York to San Francisco.

Joseph D. Pistone is a sociopath, how can you become nearly best friends with a captain & not feel any sadness when he Sonny Black got killed because of him.

He also claimed to have been proposed for membership in both New England and the Luccheses. He claimed that Mikey Lancelotti was his cousin. He also claimed to have spent time in and known mobsters in New Orleans, Denver, LA, SF, Seattle and Eastern Europe. During all this he also found time to kill a bunch of people when he was in the special forces. What is even funnier is he had a bunch of people bought his story on the old AM forum. They even attacked me when I called him out on his obvious BS.

Lol man.... I remember the name but deff not those stories.

Remmember the wars ppl use to have about piccaso being made and one of the 'top research" (Thom l ??) Went to bat for him 100% knows fs that he was made ...even met him in a backseat one day to confirm who he really was.... And ppl would almost go in uproar about pic.

Half the time u could barely understand him....

Dude ... Absolutely.
He didn't just flip like some of these guys....
He went in fake posing as something for a sole purpose of just RUINING ppl... I get the idea of UC and all that ..

Brasco not only was w them for that 6 years.... He LIVED with Sonny Black. As in shared a actual apartment with him kicking back in underwear watching cartoons (his words)....

Did all that KNOWING he was gonna DIE for this.... Fuck prison.... A death sentence....

All that shit about Sonny Black giving his shit to bartender is Brasco made up bs to make a justified reason in his head that he was ok w walking to his death.

Yeah weren’t there some insinuations that Pistone operated well outside the law on more than a few occasions? Henry Hill said Pistone really thought he was a wiseguy and had a hard time separating the two roles towards the end of his assignment. Hill could just be talking shit but I’ve read about that happening to undercovers before. Where they get so deep into the role that psychologically they start to lose sight of which person they are. Some UCs, like the one DS had on Philly Prime, are engaged in multiple investigations at the same time. This guy had one identity for the Miami police corruption case he was working on, and a second identity for this Russian mob case he was working on. Both at the same time! I don’t care who you are that’s gotta be a battle.

Dont feel sorry for Sonny Black Napolitiano. Why - he believed as a grown man in that fairy tale called the mafia. look at his boss Joe Messina. The minute the shit hit the fan when he got convicted and before his death penalty trial he knew it was over and was not going to spend the rest of his life in the can with the moonyons. Messina used his head and flipped. Sonny died for a myth that at the end of the day is only a joke. meanwhile Napolitano left his children, his wife and goomad in the hole for a lot of money and nothing to show for their lives. I'll say it - Napolitano/Lefty Ruggiero and anyone else who believes in that fair tale called the mafia gets what they deserve- Harsh - yes but it's reality!
