You've read the FBI files on Vito DeFillipo posted then? There's been a lot of interesting stuff since you revived this: The FBI file, Frank Mari thread and the old Bonnano war thread. Lots of great stuff where you can build a timeline. Looks like there was a period around 1968 where Joe Bonnano was potentially back in before his heart attack, but Sciacca wouldn't go for it.
Lol, I actually posted the DeFilippo files and the Mari article. HairyKnuckles posted a timeline in the "Banana Split" thread, right now I don't think there's much to add to that.
There's definitely some sources that make it sound like Bonanno was temporarily back in, but whether he was boss of the whole family or just his faction I'm not sure.
Whoops! Noticed after I posted you aded the Mari article but didn't see you put the DeFillipo files up. My bad. I have lazy eyes sometimes.
Wasn't suggested Bonnano was officially back in, but around 1968 with Lucchese dead and Gambino stepping back and appointing Castellano Acting Boss there seems to have been a time when the will wasn't there from the Commission to stop a potential Bonnano comeback. Looks like a combination of Joe Bonnano's illness, Sciacca's intense dislike of JB and lack of internal support from the family led to Bonnano's decision to retire.

Oh whoops, I misunderstood your point. Looking through my notes I remembered there's a FBI file that gives the credit to Genovese for making the peace/expelling JB from New York, but undoubtedly it was a combination of the factors you mentioned, JB's health, the lack of real support from the Commission on Sciacca's side.
Odd thing about the Defillipo FBI files. A captains meeting was held in Septmember 1963, before the conflict started, and DiGregorio is not named among the captains present, unless he's the redacted LNU. Sciacca however is named. My understanding was that he was under DiGregorio prior to the start of the war, unless he was there in his place.
Also struggling to place the Vito (not Defillipo)
Good catch about DiGregorio not being named, he could be the LNU tho. I know that when DiGregorio was breaking from Bonanno, the FBI had trouble figuring out who “Gasparino” was that Magaddino was referring to.
Sciacca could also have been acting for him at this time, I’d he was indeed in his crew.
Yes, just reread that part of Bill's book. But that Vito was a soldier not Captain and lived in Brooklyn not the Bronx. May have been some confusion over the 2 Vito's, either by informant or transcriber, as Vito D was from the Bronx, or at least his son Joseph was a captain there in the 70's/80's.
Oh damn, I forgot they had the other Vito listed as "Vito from the Bronx". It may have been a mix up like you said, or there could have been another Vito from the Bronx at that time. On CC's Bonanno 1963 there's three other Vito's listed as soldiers/possible soldiers
Vito B was related to JB so its possible he could meet with him personally as a soldier.
Found this in some files, the date is from January 1966. I wouldn't be surprised if it was Bill Bonanno suppling the information since we know he was in contact with the FBI.
