Familyl Questions (not really mafia related)

Post by dixiemafia »

I know a lot of people here know about ancestry back in Sicily so I figured I would ask here. If y'all think it should be moved then please do so.

I have proven an Aunt I had was born and from Chiusa Sclafani who then went to Napoli and rode across the pond on the Taormina. Anyone know what Taormina means?

Also she had a child with a guy whose surname was Del Porto. Is there anyone who knows if anyone of any stature in the Mafia world was tied back to Chiusa Sclafani? My cousin who was a Del Porto was busted for running a gambling den out of his house in the 90's and got busted back in the 60's for bootleg liquor lol I'm not sure where the Del Porto's were from though.
If I didn't have my case coming up, I would like to come back with you gentlemen when this is over with and really lay the law down what is going on in this country.....

Taormina is a town in Sicily so the ship was probably named after that.

I might have heard of one person with the surname Del Porto, but only saw it in passing.

Many of The Godfather Sicily scenes were filmed in and around Taormina. I believe the village served as the setting for Corleone.

I thought the Godfather was filmed in Savoca, Sicily...

Which is a half hour drive North of Taormina

I think its less then half an hour but i agree...i really got wasted with dozens of limoncello shots in the tavern where Mike talked to Apollonias father, since there was a bar and lots of pics on the walls in there of the movie, and also some hand-made guns as decoration, and i think nearby or some 10 or 15 min walking or maybe less, there was the church where they got married, and also ill never forget Coppolas silver statue

You could do a search for a family name or a ship name on the Ellis Island Foundation web site.

Thanks for the link. It oddly enough is missing my Aunt but I have a record that I found elsewhere that explained everything. She was 19 and could read and write, and paid $40 on Ellis Island to basically become a citizen as she listed as going to see her brother and live with her sister in Santa Maria California and she had her Mother with her. Her Mother was a Perricone (maiden name). Her Mother was already listed as a widow, and they landed on Ellis Island on Christmas of 19 so I'm thinking maybe her Father died in the war. I just linked to my cousin after all these years so I'm getting the stories about my Aunt which is awesome. Hoping to finally meet her once this COVID shit is over as I've never met them but my Mom knew my Aunt as she was my Mom's Great Aunt. First woman in my hick family that had earrings

Crabby thanks again as I even found a pic of the ship on that website too. I think the reason my Aunt wasn't listed was because of her surname maybe was indexed wrong. I have a record from that site that shows the log book and has her name listed as they were in alphabetical order but I can't find the individual record but it probably is the same record I have.

dixie here's a tip. It sounds like you made progress with a search on the web site. You might and I emphasis the might gain more access if you establish a free account with a log in. If you have already done that then what you are looking for :might: be available for a fee. If you already created an account then you already have noticed everything is available for a price. But that's one way for them to make their money. Good luck.

I never realized that was an actual tavern, is it a big tourist spot? I'm surprised it wasn't publicized that much, or was it?

It is...the first thing you can see in the hotels around eastern Sicily is the Godfather tour, but i was around that part for awhile so we went around the villiages on our own, meaning with our own car. You can literally get wasted in the tavern and the inside is quite beautiful. The time when I was there it wasnt packed at all, just few tourists here and there but yeah its an atraction, with all the churches and stuff...all of the places are marked so you cannot miss anything

Sounds like a good idea to travel on your own if you are good at it. Now for the most important question: Did any young ladies look like Apollonia ?

That's a good question you have there bert. I would think all the guys look like Apollonia and all the woman look like Tennessee Tuxedo. :o
