Time Magazine: The Conglomerate of Crime

Post by BeatiPaoli »

To Everyone: I would like to know if anyone on the Forum has the actual Time Magazine of Friday, August 22, 1969, entitled "The Conglomerate of Crime". I would like to know if, within the article in the magazine, there is a map of the United States with 24 Families noted on the map. It is entitled "La Cosa Nostra" with an Octopus superimposed on the map (the head of the Octopus is covering the states of Idaho and Montana). I looked up the article on the Internet, and found the body of the article, but with no chart (and no reference within the body of the article referring to a chart). Obviously, from my post you can deduce I have a copy of the chart, but I cannot figure out if the chart came from a Newsweek article or a Time magazine article. I know it came from one of these 2 publications. The closest thing I can figure out is that it may have came from the aforementioned Time magazine article. Regardless, I would like to track down the original magazine from which I copied this map. I cannot believe I don't own a copy of it, but I cannot find it in my collection of magazines on the subject. One other detail: the map has 24 Families, the name of the Family associated with the city, and a number next to each name with the assumed approximate number of members in the respective Family (interestingly, it shows Pittsburgh but not Scranton/Erie/Wilkes-Barre).

Any assistance would be appreciated.

To Everyone: And for those who may be wondering about the total national membership of the 24 noted Cosa Nostra Families as enumerated on the map, if you add up all the individual Family memberships, the total number is: 5,535.

Does that number include associates or just made members? Because that would work out to an average of 230 made members per family. Some of the New York families probably had that many made members at one time, but many of the smaller families only had 30–50 members at their peak.

To TallGuy19: The 5,535 number was VERY, VERY WRONG. MY MISTAKE. The number was actually 4337, and yes, were made guys ONLY. I will share with you the Families and the membership numbers ascribed to them. IIRC, I did this years ago on the RD Forum, and both Pogo and Wiseguy (especially Pogo; and I highly respect both of their acumen on the subject) gave me a hard time about it. However, these are Time's (or Newsweek's) reported numbers, not mine, and were probably gleaned from some government report on Cosa Nostra at the time of publication (which could be 1969, if my assumption on the publication is correct, which is what I am trying to find out). If posters on this thread take issue, that is fine; understand these are not my numbers.

NYC Gambino 1000
NYC Catena 600
NYC Colombo 200
NYC Tramunti 150
NYC Sciacca 400
Newark area DeCavalcante 40
Boston--Providence Patriarca 150
Buffalo Magaddino 300
Philadelphia Bruno 200
Detroit Zerilli 200
Pittsburgh M. Genovese 150
Cleveland Scalish 150
Milwaukee Balistrieri 50
Chicago DeLucia 300
Rockford Zammuto 30
St. Louis Giordano 35
Kansas City Civella 75
Denver Coletti 40
Tampa Trafficante 75
New Orleans Marcello 50
Dallas Civello 25
San Francisco Lanza 12
San Jose Cerrito 30
Los Angeles Locato (sp) 75

I hope the ensuing discussion (if there is any) does not focus on the veracity of the numbers, etc. I put those figures from the map out there in an attempt to help identify from which publication the map originated (and I believe it came from the title of this thread). Perhaps the name of the Family head will help in the identification of the publication (but that designation would only be as good as the sources at that time)?

Once again, any help would be appreciated.

Interesting that Springfield, Madison and Denver aren't included. Though they were on the verge of extinction in 1969 they were still being investigated by the FBI.

To Cavita: Denver was on the list. Please look again. Madison, Springfield, Rochester, and NorthEastern Pennsylvania were not on the list . I believe the big surprise among those 4 was the exclusion of Russell Buffalino!!!

I know that picture you're talking about. I believe someone else asked for this on the forum some time ago and somebody posted it. I may have this picture too but I'm on my phone and lazy... If I have it, I'll share it soon (if nobody beats me to it).
