Keep in mind that a couple billion in the 1980's would be nearly $5 billion today. The mob, including Franzese, made a lot of money with the gas scam but that's a stretch.

In his speeches he's always made a distinction between the Sicilian "Mafia" and American "La Cosa Nostra." People who have studied the mob know the similarities and differences but I'm not sure why he chooses to emphasize it so much for general audiences.

There were many, many people making money off the gas tax fraud including the Russians & as the "Legend" grows in time the numbers become way exaggerated into non reality & inaccurate descriptions missing a lot of pertinent details. Examples, Meyer Lansky & Al Capone.
