Cosa Nostra, the new mafia pact between New York and Palermo
A new pact, or rather a revival of the link between the Palermo mafia and Cosa nostra in New York. In Sicily the second generation of the 'escaped' is back, now that Riina and Provenzano are no longer there.
With the death of Provenzano and Riina, the ex-leaders of the Sicilian mafia, and with a Matteo Messina Denaro increasingly isolated and hunted by the investigators, Cosa Nostra resurrects, the Gambinos and the Inzerillos driven out of Sicily by the now deceased ex-mafia leaders return.
The mafia of the 50s, 60s and 70s returns to Sicily, the old ties between New York and Palermo return. In Sicily, 'the escaped' return.
To take stock of the situation, following the anti-mafia investigation taken in July last year 'New Connection', the parliamentary anti-mafia commission led by Nicola Morra (M5s) thought about it, who in recent days went to the USA for a very important contact mission.
The anti-mafia parliamentary commission, made up of deputies, senators and advisors, met with the US justice minister, FBI director Asher Wray and the goddess director, as well as the district attorneys of New York, Manhattan and Brooklyn, but also those responsible of the United Nations that deal with international cooperation in the field of criminal law.
The point on the return of Cosa nostra to Sicily
Morra explained that the five-day mission served to take stock of the situation, to understand what the activities of the mafia families in New York are at the moment, to understand the level of interaction and integration between Cosa Nostra, the Ndrangheta that comes from Canada and other foreign mafias that also play a role.
A bond that has revived
Former substitute Palermo prosecutor Roberto Tartaglia, participated as a consultant to the mission and reconstructed with journalists what happened in recent years in the renewed bond between New York and Palermo.
A phenomenon that occurred "against all odds that it was possible to make," he said, because "Riina was still alive" when the descendants of Cosa nostra palermitana, the descendants of the 'escaped' and the 5 families of New York, Strengthen.
The mafia fueled by the landing of the USA in 1945 has returned to Palermo, the one subsidized to bring order to Sicily with the expulsion of the fascists. A mafia that killed in the following decades, but that mainly did business, not that Riina stragista, but that profiteer and yet dangerous.

Cosa nostra and that renewed Palermo-Usa axis
by Aaron Pettinari
Messina Money in Trapani " reference for clan "
In the half-yearly report, give the image of a mafia undergoing reorganization
Since the death of the chief of the Corleonese chiefs, Totò Riina , the Sicilian mafia has undergone a phase of internal reorganization that has led the families of Palermo to turn their gaze even overseas and to strengthen the axis with the Americans.
This is what emerges from the reading of the half-yearly report of the Dia, presented yesterday to Parliament, in which the results of the anti-mafia operations of the last year are lined up.
Analysts highlight how "in a mafia scenario like the present one, characterized by an urgent need for a new structure and to resolve the long-standing question of leadership, solidity, criminal influence, military capacity and the 'political' weight of individual families, of mandates and the respective top structures play a fundamental role for the definition of the power relations and, consequently, for the identification of the new strategies and new balances ".
The territorial articulation of the criminal consortiums in the Palermo province is still structured on 15 mandates (8 in the city and 7 in the province), made up of 81 families (32 in the city and 49 in the province). After years of internal review, Cosa nostra palermitana has attempted to give itself a definitive organization to restore the full functionality of the traditional top management, the Provincial Commission, delegated to take the most important decisions for the entire organization and in the management of criminal affairs more profitable.
" A possible response to these needs - reads the document -is the pursuit of restoring the relational network within the Sicilian factions, to broaden the goals, to return to play a major role even outside the territory of competence, whose socio-economic fabric no longer guarantees sufficient resources . "
So on the one hand we try to revitalize the contacts between the families of the island and, on the other, to recover relationships with their historical offshoots abroad.
United States neighbors
It cannot be overshadowed that in the last year the investigations have shown a " persistent topicality of relationships between exponents of historic Cosa nostra palermitana, so-called losers, with elements of Cosa nostra americana with particular reference to the Gambino family from over fifty years rooted in the United States . "
The data emerged strongly in the 'New Connection' operation, of 17 July 2019, which hit the Palermitan mandate of Passo di Rigano, the historic stronghold of the Inzerillo family. The report recalls that in the July blitz, shot between Sicily and the USA, members of the Gambino, Inzerillo, Di Maggio, Mannino and Spatola families were hit, i.e. the heirs of the so-called 'escapes' of the second mafia war of the early years Eighty, who were forced to leave Palermo to find refuge in the United States to escape Riina's death.
Already in the past it had been acknowledged the "return" of the "escaped" to Sicily strongly desired by the bosses Salvatore Lo Piccolo and with the approval of Bernardo Provenzano.
At the time, however, "losing" families could not play roles in the management of mandates. Then, in more recent years there has been a turning point and the relationship also gives evidence of an evolution in the relationship between the Corleonese wing and that of the "Americans" with lots of agreements, in the name of business. The Inzerillo association would have a "decisive role" in this new development.
The drug returns
According to Dia " Cosa nostra palermitana, although severely affected by institutional law enforcement, is still very pervasiveAccording to the investigators, the "operational strategies" of the Palermo clans are " constantly addressed to the imposition of lace, which represents a primary source of sustenance and constitutes a fundamental tool for controlling the territory.
And in close connection with the extortion phenomenon, there is the practice of usury . "
However, the drug trafficking represents for the Sicilian mafia" one of the most profitable sources of cash wealth ".
A criminal sector"in which to consolidate alliances and, therefore, consolidate its role in criminal structures; an opportunity to re-accredit itself in the supply chain in order to establish its own safe and continuous supply channels, while also providing employment in the various activities.
In a framework such as that described, the cities of Palermo and Catania continue to play a central role in the hashish flows from Campania and cocaine from Calabria, for redistribution on the island markets (and also Maltese, as repeated drug seizures seem to suggest occurred in the port of Pozzallo and in that State) ".
give drills
To demonstrate the" search for supply channels for stable drugs"by Sicilian organized crime, Dia cites the 'Black Smith' and 'Kerkent' operations. The first, concluded by the Palermo mobile team on May 21, 2019, allowed to arrest 21 people considered responsible for conducting a traffic of hashish and cocaine from Naples to Palermo.
The second, however, led to the arrest of 32 people, shedding light on the dynamics of the mafia mandate of Agrigento and documenting how its top element had constituted and directly directed drug trafficking with a supply " which also took place thanks to contacts with the Vibonese 'Ndrangheta ".
In addition, the presence of criminal gangs of foreigners is recorded on the territory of the province. From the info-investigative findings it emerges as "the recourse of Cosa Nostra to these groups is limited to a collaboration, even if not occasional, in the illicit activities considered more risky, such as the sale of drugs, the exploitation of prostitution or the collection of 'lace'.
Mafia families would maintain control of the activities in their respective areas, tolerating the presence of organized foreign groups in marginal roles of cooperation or delegating illegal activities to the same portions ".
And the super-fugitive Matteo Messina Denaro?
In the photograph drawn of the reorganization of Cosa Nostra, there is a name that surprisingly little emerges: that of the super-latent boss Matteo Messina Denaro . His is a figure that according to analysts still today would be a point of reference for the Province of Trapani, despite the difficulties in managing hiding, but would not go further, limiting itself to characterizing its sphere of influence only in the Province of Trapani. " In the province - writes Dia - the figure of Matteo Messina Denaro, at the head of the mandate of Castelvetrano and provincial representative of Trapani, still constitutes the main point of reference for the matters of greatest interest to the organization, despite the long absence .
"And then again:" Although the boss continues to benefit from widespread sentiment of loyalty by many members of the Trapani mafia organization there is no lack of signs of impatience on the part of some affiliates for difficult command management due to the hiding that tends to reverberate negatively, leaving out important questions for the organization's affairs ".
A fact that "out of tune" if you consider that Messina Denaro he is the last free agent of that massacre wing who set Italy on fire, blackmailing the state in the early nineties. An endless blackmail if you consider that the boss, nowhere to be found since 1993, holds unspeakable secrets about that season of terror.
It is also in light of this "role" that it seems difficult not to consider the Trapani boss at the center of Cosa Nostra, at least for the highest level strategies.
Looking at the affairs of the four historical mandates of Trapani, Alcamo, Castelvetrano and Mazara del Vallo, it is confirmed that the first two are right "by well-known exponents of the historic mafia families with an almost 'dynastic' succession system and that of Castelvetrano continues to refer to the fugitive Messina Denaro.
The situation of Mazara del Vallo's mandate appears more dynamic, the value of which in the balance of Cosa Nostra is traditionally significant having in the past represented one of the most important mafia joints for the affirmation of the Corleone leadership. In Mazara, in fact, the issue of regency is going through a transition phase, not without tension, following the arrests that have taken place ".
In the report, based also on the seizures of assets, reference is made to the demonstrated interests of the Trapani mafia in the construction, renewable energy, large-scale food distribution and business in the tourism-hotel sector and real estate investments (also through judicial auctions), on the sector of investment in works of art and that of games and online betting.
Furthermore, it is recalled that one of the five historic mafia families operating in New York originated from a country in the province, Castellammare del Golfo. Despite the lack of evidence of specific links in place, investigative activities in nearby Palermo have revealed renewed contacts between Cosa nostra and similar US organizations "

Anti Mafia Prosecutors all say Matteo Messina Denaro aka Diabolik is the undisputed cappo di tutti capi of the Cosa Nostra. No matter if he is in hiding or isolated. He is still calling all the shots, and the way it sounds, no one would have the balls to even challenge him with his reputation.

Trust me this guy is the boss. He was Provenzanos protege, Denaro was running shit for him when he got arrested in 2006, then after Toto Riina died in 2017, there's no one else but Diabolik. He's got the resources and funding as well.

Messina Denaro has never been the boss of bosses. Some news reports have simply theorized that he could be, mostly from the fact that he's the most notorious name still free from the Corleonsi days.srg16 wrote: ↑Tue Feb 18, 2020 8:41 amAlso they Sicilian Mafia prosecutors can say whatever they want that hes not, but he is.scagghiuni wrote: ↑Mon Feb 17, 2020 3:06 pmwho said it? they said he's the provincial boss of trapani, not the boss of bossessrg16 wrote: ↑Mon Feb 17, 2020 10:54 am Anti Mafia Prosecutors all say Matteo Messina Denaro aka Diabolik is the undisputed cappo di tutti capi of the Cosa Nostra.
