Random questions regarding 1960

Post by BeatiPaoli »

To Everyone: I am trying to get a handle on the status of Cosa Nostra within certain cities during the year 1960. Respectfully, I would appreciate any and all opinions, feedback and information regarding the following statements. Is it true that, in 1960, :

1. Detroit had a regime in San Diego ( and was the capo's last name Matranga)?

2. The Gambinos had a regime in Baltimore (and was the capo's last name Corbi)?

3. Youngstown, Ohio, had members of two regimes in that city, one from Pittsburgh and one from Cleveland?

4. The Madison, Wisconsin Family, under Carlo Caputo, was still in existence (albeit on its last legs; the vote to disband as reported on the Mary Farrell site was subsequent to 1960) ?

5. The Rochester, New York Family was up and running, and the alleged Family boss at that time was Frank Valente?

6. Miami and Las Vegas were "open cities"; was Atlantic City an "open city" also, or did that occur in the 1970s?

Your collective input and information is appreciated.

I have an FBI file from 1973 that stated by late 1972 or early 1973 that Madison voted to disband with some of the members voting to "throw in" with the Milwaukee family and the others voting to just retire.

I'm not really knowledgable enough to answer your questions but I can say with some confidence that Atlantic City wouldn't have been considered an "open city" in 1960. It would have been the Philly family's territory even then, I don't think Scarfo had moved there yet but I believe there already was some kind of crew there. Forget the name of the guy, these guys on here would know for sure. But I don't think much was happening there in 1960 because supposedly it was just a run down former resort town at that point and legalized gambling didn't come into effect until the late 70s.

Rochester was still a Buffalo family Crew in 1960. They didn't break away until the late 1960s.

To Everyone: Thank you to all who have responded thus far.

To Pogo: Without imposing too much, do you have an particular year within the 1960s that the Rochester Family was established? And am I correct that Frank Valente was the first boss?

1) In San Diego there was a sicilian group which Joseph Ernest Matranga was part and that had relation with chicago and detroit but remained a L.A. family crew.

2)Yes,he was Frank Corbi but the crew was inactive in the last 1980s.

3) Yes,"In the 1970s, Cleveland gavePittsburgh control of the Niles/Youngstown, OH area vending andgambling businesses. As a result,Cleveland received 25 percent of the profits from these activities, with Pittsburgh and Youngstown receivingthe remainder." (Angelo Lonardo testimony)

4)No,because in 1968 the family had only 10 active members and in 1968 FBI file is write that Milwaukee mafia tried and failed in 1966 to absorb Madison amd that in 1968 the family was under Chicago wing

5)No in the 1960s Rochester was still a Buffalo territory with Frank J. Valenti as capo. They split in the early 1970s.

6)No.When was legalized the casinos in Atlantic City the other families must ask the ok to Philly and gave a share of their bussiness in AC.Some researchers think that the reason because the genoveses let think to Caponigro that had the commission approval to kill Bruno is that wanted that AC would become an open city.

To Everyone: Many thanks to all who participated with the great information and references! I was almost sure San Diego had a regime from Detroit; I guess I was incorrect.

Part of my motivation was to find a common year where all 28 American Cosa Nostra Families were in existence at the same time; in appears 1968 may be the year. The only other two indigenous American Families were Newark and Birmingham, both of which were disbanded in the 1930s. I don't count Tuscon as a city with a "legitimate" Family, and the Colacurcios of Seattle were not part of Cosa Nostra.

Another part of my motivation was to discern significant regimes of established Cosa Nostra Families based NOT within their established home territory.
San Diego and Baltimore immediately came to mind.

Thank you all again.
