Their father, Giosue Meli, was an early member of the D'Aquila/Gambino family. He died in 1973.

It's a new morning in America... fresh, vital. The old cynicism is gone. We have faith in our leaders. We're optimistic as to what becomes of it all. It really boils down to our ability to accept. We don't need pessimism. There are no limits.
Re: Angelo and Philip Meli?
Angelo Meli was said to have participated in the murder of Gambino Crime Family member-informant Alfredo Santantonio.

Are you talking about the murder that brooklyn based capo Peter Ferrara was involved in the early 60s?Something like 1962 or 1964.

that's correct. Santantonio was killed in 1963. Scarpa told the FBI that Meli was involved in the murder, although I don't know if that was ever confirmed.

It's also interesting how little attention Santantonio received. This was the Gambino's own Scarpa, potentially their own Valachi, and unlike the other informants this one was found out (from an LE source or otherwise), successfully killed and the confirmed participants got away with it.
That is very interesting what you are saying JD thanks, tell me please who were the guys mentioned by Gravano that carried out the hit on Santantonio? The guys that were under Aurello.
Thank you
Re: Angelo and Philip Meli?
Thanks for the clarification. The "Gambino's own Scarpa" is a good way of putting it. Does anyone know if Valachi had a reaction to his murder? Sanatanotnio was widely assumed on the street to have been an informant, and it happened just before Valachi testified. Bobby Kennedy must have used all his influence to mostly bury this story.JD wrote:The Santantonio murder is one of those cases where they had the guys responsible for the murder dead to rights, except that the wiretap evidence ended up inadmissible. Re: Angelo and Philip Meli?
I was just checking my old notes on an article I wrote partly about Santantonio. At the time of Santantonio's murder, Scarpa told the FBI that the government “was planning to back up Valachi’s testimony with testimony from Santantonio.” By killing Santantonio, the Mafia hoped the government “would not be able to use Valachi now because we got rid of their corroborator.”
