I gotta think guys like Daddono, Alderisio, Cerone, etc. - they had their pick of the schwag from the robbery crews. In Melrose, the burglary crews were like a franchise business - you signed up and were given jobs/targets and inside tips for a share of the loot - if you got pinched and were paying, the Outfit got you out.

I agree and I also agree that both Melrose Park and Elmwood Park had the largest number of burglars who were associated with the Outfit. Lots of legendary faces came out from those "ranks".....Can't forget the so-called multi-million Purolator job which was done by Pete Gushi and some other fellas during the 70s, and allegedly overseen by Catuara.

You're absolutely right, almost everyone of them started as one. For example, both Lombardo and D'Antonio used to work for Alderisio, Pranno and Salvatore i think, at the same time

There were a ton of burglary crews operating up and down Lake in Melrose Park and Grand Avenue that never got attention - I stated before that PAnozzo's father was an infamous jewel thief. Gerry "The Dinger" Carusiello was also a large burglary crew chief. Nick Guido was an exceptionally successful burglar.

The German ran a scary crew down in Florida that Albie Vena was part of. Legs D'Antonio and Lombardo worked for Jonny DeBiase first - then Phil when he took over. Lombardo, Schweihs and Ricciardi were essentially Phil's main guys before he went to prison. I think the German was Alderisio's true protoge - he took over everything that wasn't nailed down - even killed Phil's nephew Ricciardi to take his rackets a decade after Phil passed.

Yeah Guido was one helluva individual, including all of the members from his gang. Also don't forget Varelli, Fiorito and also LaJoy and Boscarino...

Villain love your posts on Chicago - I could probably ask you 100 questions and come up with 100 more. Carl Fiorito was Melrose Park as well. Have you ever come across some of the fathers of the Grand Avenue guys? Especially Blind Louie Panozzo? There are FBI files on him but cannot get them on Mary Farrell.

Chinatown had their burglary crews too.... notably Ronnie Jarrett and his boys. They were pulling jobs, mostly commercial places, from the Chicago and surrounding areas all the way out to Arizona. If I'm not mistaken, his FBI file states some jobs in Louisiana and Alabama too.

The German was from Chinatown - so were the Alex brothers and Frank Ferraro.

I think the smart burglars in Chicago preyed on small towns in other states - those hick cops were not as sophisticated and no one knew who they were. Indiana was a major burglary target for the Outfit for years - Rocco Infelise and his North Avenue Steakhouse Gang used to steal and sell schwag from Kentucky to Arkansas.

Thanks bud, same goes to you, meaning most of your posts are quite informative and to tell you the truth, you also posted few names that I never heard of before lol

I don't know if you ever read this project, but this is 90 percent from my knowledge regarding the Outfits burglary ops from the 1920s until the 2000s, and so whenever you have the time, pls check it out.

Enjoy

Back in the days, Roti Sr and Nick Alex (Gus' dad) owned a restaurant in Chinatown, where many old and up and coming members used to hang out, such as Guzik and Fusco or Caruso and Catuara, and story goes that Nick was a helluva cook. Also the Alex family used to own a flower shop in which young Ferraro used to work as a delivery truck driver. At the time Catuara lived in the same neighbourhood as the Alex brothers, Sam, George and Gus, and belonged to a gang which was formed mostly by young Italian hoodlums such as Frank Passaro, Joe Controtno, Frank Caruso, Louis Paletto, Nick Biondi, Frank Locascio, Rocco DeStefano, Frank Sortino a.k.a. Ferraro and his older brother John

Any idea where that restaurant was located? I think Alex grew up on Cottage Grove right? I believe Roti's headquarters were on Wentworth & 26th but that neighborhood changed after the Tollways went in and probably isn't there anymore.

My nephew and I recently rode those electric scooters around the Bucktown neighborhood looking at some old buildings that used to be Outfit hangouts - even the garage behind the old Circus Cafe where Tough Tony Capezio burned his hands chopping a car used in the St. Vday massacre is still standing. So is the building on Damen where the Panzko gang hung out to plan scores.

I've read that Gussie Alex's older brother was one of the more infamous hitmen in Chicago and also did hits for the Detroit Outfit.

Phil’s Liquors was located at 26th Street and Wentworth Avenue, while the restaurant used to be at 2604 South Wentworth.

Sam Alex was indeed a feared hitman. His nickname was "RIP".

That's true and after the 1936 Mike Galvin hit, according the Chicago Crime Commission, the Outfit allegedly exiled Sam from Chicago for being “nutty and unmanageable".

Sam bought a huge farm in Cassopolis, Michigan; with its own private lake, meaning that's how rich this guy was at the time.

Sam Alex changed his name to Sam or Herbert Taylor and since he didn't have children of his own, he and his wife often made wonderful things for the kids in the neighbourhood, like for example at Christmas time the couple had a practice of leaving huge boxes of toys at the doorsteps, “anonymously”, and when there was snow, Sam had the practise of hitching a sled to his tractor and taking children for rides around the fields
