Yep, I enjoyed that book. Never heard from Zanfardino again - before or after. He was very unknown outside the neighborhood. He gained prominence with that indictment. But afterwards, fell back into the woodwork. Don’t know if he survived jail, retired, died, or whatever. He lived out in LI I believe. ..... Johnny Echoes of course was pinched again (several times I think), once again for babania I know. Active even as a older guy. Lol..... a die hard for sure!

ROCCO (BARNEY) FELLO
JOSEPH FELLO
WILLIAM (WILLY) FELLO
-
The “FELLO” Brothers - born and raised in Corona, Queens (32-29 101st Street), were “associates” of the Lucchese Family, and specifically close to crew “captains” Anthony (Tony Ducks) Corallo and neighborhood friend Joseph (Joe Brown) Lucchese.

They were familiar with, and associates of, many of the Queens mobsters of the era, including Lucchese, Corallo and Joseph Laratro.

They owned the popular Fello’s Lounge at 84-14 Astoria Blvd., in the Jackson Heights-Corona area for many years.

Activities: newspaper industry-labor rackets, extortion and selling labor “peace”, bookmaking.

Barney and Willy Fello also became invested in, and came to control several major newspaper and magazine wholesale distribution companies in Westbury L.I., that supplied to the five boroughs up to 75% of all the major periodicals of the era (remember there was no other source of news in those days. This was before the computer era). These included Newsday, NY Times and NY Daily News.
-
Note: [John Walsh, an original investor in Bi-County with Fello, testified that after investing, he later learned that Willy Fello had underworld connections. After meeting Barney Fello, he witnessed Barney meeting with mob boss “Tony Ducks” Corallo on several occasions.

He was eventually “pushed out” of the business. He received his original $20,000. back and sold out, getting away from the hoodlum element.

They became the focus of a major federal labor-racket investigation, aimed at racketeer influence in the newspaper industry. This became an industry-wide scandal in late 1959 into 1960.

They and notorious Jewish hoodlum Irving (Itsy Bitsy) Bitz (ex-convict and labor racketeer) and Sam Feldman - president of the union among others (eleven total defendants), would go on to be indicted by the southern district in a major industry-wide extortion ring aimed at Suburban Wholesalers Assn. - a trade group of 19 distributors of magazines and newspapers in the New York City and greater metropolitan areas.
-
Before the indictments fell, Bitz had been questioned by the Senate Rackets Committee, where he invoked his Fifth-Amendment privilege, regarding questions about payoffs to him and the Fello’s to insure safe delivery of periodicals.
-
Note: [at the time, Bitz was the largest distributor of magazines in the nation. He operated Bronx County News Corp., and was partners in Bi-County News and several other firms]
-
They were charged with various counts of: conspiracy, coercion, restraint of trade, extortion and Sherman anti-trust law violations.

The Fello brothers would see Bitz convicted and get a 5 year prison term, but their criminal counts were later dismissed for lack of evidence.
-
Later, additional federal income-tax evasion counts were brought against Rocco Fello for his ownership interest in Bi-County. He was convicted and received a 1 year jail term for evading $2,200. in taxes on $10,000. he extorted from a NJ newspaper distribution firm from 1956-58.

In the mid-1940’s, Barney Fello and Bobby Haney gave a beating to a rival right in the open on Northern Blvd., in Corona. They were not arrested by police because the victim (although suffering multiple head gashes and other serious wounds) refused to sign a complaint against them.

In 1960, federal authorities brought perjury indictments against William (Willy) Fello - president of Bi-County News Co., of Westbury, and John Lawrence - “business agent” of the Newspaper & Mail Deliverers Union (Independent).
-
They were accused of lying during the tax evasion trial of Willy’s brother Rocco (Barney) Fello in federal court.

In 1963, Charlie and Joey Fello were among 32 mob figures listed by the Daily News and publicly identified by the Queens D.A. as being among the top Lucchese hoodlums residing in the county.

After theses major indictments, subsequent trials and public exposure they brought, the Fello brothers, already in their mid-60’s, tried to maintain a lower profile, semi-retiring from the newspaper distribution business.

No more was publicly heard from any of them...... no dod available.

Interesting to see so much Luchese influence in Corona/Jackson Heights. Always thought it was Genovese dominated. I also wonder if the remnants of the Luchese/Corona crew were gobbled up by Long Island, Bronx or just simply faded away.

Fellos Bar is now Daltons bar and I've been there.

These profiles are great.

.... at one time, almost ALL northern Queens, especially those areas, were Tommy Brown’s. When Queens was almost farm land, before heavy development, he claimed it before anyone else saw the potential. Remember his blood family had moved from Harlem to Corona by the 1930’s, so that was their area, right behind Harlem and the Bronx..... ALWAYS Lucchese territory! All the bigwigs relocated there!

As you know, they originally started in Harlem, expanded to the Bronx, then Corona and the adjoining towns (Malba, etc), and later into Nassau’s South Shore, specifically Lido Beach, Long Beach, etc (Malba and Long Island was generally their bedroom)

DANIEL (DANNY NARROW) LARATRO - born 1904 in Corona (139 Provost St. or 50th Avenue) and grew up at (108-57 50th Ave), Queens as Donato Laratro (TN). Later resided in Flushing (172-17 32nd Ave), before moving to Jackson Heights where he would live the rest of his life. The older brother of Joseph (Joey Narrow), a future Capo in the old Lucchese mob of East Harlem.

Note: [this profile, like many I have posted, is about a little-known but active figure during the 1930-50’s era of NYC. This “sketch” so to speak, opens up a “world” to the reader that has never typically been available through many other sources. Few have ever even heard his name, let alone actually know anything about him or many of the other fellows on these posts. “Singular” in nature is a excellent word for the information presented here]

Affiliation: he was an “associate” of the Lucchese Family’s Queens crew.

Activity: gambling rackets -(bookmaking, dice-card games)

He operated for many decades as a Queens (horses-sports) bookmaker. Danny was also active in the numbers business in his youth, on a much smaller scale than his bookmaking (which was his mainstay), and periodically went partners in various “floating” card and dice games.

Arrest Record:
Danny was a very low-key guy. I am not even sure if he was ever arrested. If he was, it was very early in his career, the record is half buried by father-time, and nothing came of it. He may have never been picked-up, although he was known to local (LE) as a (KG) known gambler.
-
His primary area of operation was always the Bayside-Flushing-Corona-Elmhurst-Jackson Heights-Woodside sections along Roosevelt Avenue (under the EL), where he felt comfortable.

“Danny Narrow” was an independent sort, and although the brother of Joey Narrow, maintained this “independence”, preferring to operate free of restraints or “under the thumb” of the Lucchese mob hierarchy.

Danny Narrow would typically “bank” his own work, not laying-off as is very common.

He would partner-up as he saw fit with various guys in the family, as well as others, without a lot of oversight...... It’s the way he liked it!

Hangouts and Places Frequented (all notorious underworld watering holes or that era):
-
Savoia Italian Restaurant - Roosevelt Ave., Jackson Heights (owned by a Genovese associate)
-
Tufaro’s Italian Restaurant - Roosevelt Ave., Corona (top hangout for Lucchese mob)
-
Tasso’s Bar - Roosevelt Ave., Jackson Heights (hidden ownership by the two Joey’s)
-
The Old Timers Bar - Roosevelt Ave., Corona
-
The Sapphire Room - Jackson Heights (hidden ownership by Joe Brown)
—-
Close associates and friends over the years included:
-
Joseph Laratro - his brother of course and family Capo
-
Joseph (Joe Brown) Lucchese - Tommy’s kid brother and boyhood friend, a family Capo
-
Arthur Laratro - a policy runner and cousin
-
Jimmy and Tony Lucchese - two other Queens gambling figures and Lucchese relatives
-
Frank (Frankie Bell) Campanello - boyhood chum and associate
-
Donato (Dempsey) Laietta - longtime partner of Danny in crap-card games.
-
Joseph D’Auria - a (little known) Family gambling figure who lived near Danny in Jackson Hghts. who almost died in an auto accident when he and his wife accidentally drove his car into the water off a pier.
-
The Fello brothers (Barney, Willy and Joey Fello)..... all local hoods. Barney would go on to some infamy in the newspaper rackets with Irving Bitz.... ran a local tavern
-
Joseph (Joe Palisades) Rosato - a top Capo, Lucchese brother-in-law, and neighbor of Danny in Jackson Heights, garment industry power

“Danny Narrow” was one of the nicest guys you’d ever wanna meet! Easy going, light and breezy, and a true gentleman (in a world that had few).

He came and went at his discretion with little oversight and no “boss” per se! ...... he always did “his thing”. And of course, having grown up with a veritable “who’s who” of the Harlem and Queens underworld, and his brother being a “skipper”, nobody bothered him!
-
And Danny was no dope either, (he made the school honor roll repeatedly as a youth - Lol).... he was a sharp, savvy, well spoken “gentleman gambler”.... and a very well liked guy!
-
Unfortunately, Daniel Laratro died young, at the age of 57 years old, in 1961.

JOSEPH (JOE BIKINI) BROCCHINI - born 1933, in Corona, Queens (57-42 Penrod Street). Raised in Corona, by the early 1960’s moved to the neighboring town of Flushing.

Later with his success as a racketeer, he relocated up to Harrison in Westchester County (Polly Park Road).... a multi-million dollar area.
—-
A “key” associate of the Queens (Corona) regime of the Lucchese family. He served directly under (Joe Brown) Lucchese - co-capo of that regime with (Joey Narrow) Laratro.

By the time of his death in 1976, he had been identified by the FBI as a newly inducted “soldier” in the Lucchese Family.

Note: [the Corona “crew” was the base Queens regime of the Lucchese Family. They of course had various crews throughout all the boro’s. But “Corona” per se was ground zero and their “stronghold” outside of Harlem and the Bronx which was their original base. They also had many other crews in other areas.... the Little Italy, Brooklyn and NJ crews among them]
—-
Arguably one of the “tougher” guys to come out of that neighborhood. He had a reputation early on as an enforcer, utilized by the “Two-Joey’s” to quell any trouble or discipline issues for the regime.
—-
Known criminal activities:
-
Shylocking
Strong-arm enforcement
Floating dice games
Thefts and (stolen auto-parts)
Gambling
Pornography rackets
Suspected narcotics (cocaine)
—-
Associates:
Joseph (Joe Brown) Lucchese
Joseph (Joey Narrow) Laratro
Stefano (Steve) LaSalle
Frank (Frankie Bell) Campanello
Alfred (Sonny) Scotti
James Scotti
Ralph Borello
Vincent Borello
.......among many others I didn’t list.

....... any LCN members emanating from Corona today, originally “cut their teeth” under Lucchese. (the exception being the Serpico Family)
—-
In 1950, Brocchini (17) was among five young Corona hoods picked up for operating a burglary-safecracking ring that ransacked eight various businesses along Queens north shore for $26,000. during a one week spree. LE believed that the gang was responsible for appx. 20 such burglaries in Nassau and Queens before being apprehended .
—-
Brocchini started out as a local shylock, which was his main endeavor, augmented by crap games and other rackets.

LE reported during either the late 1950’s-early 1960’s that Joe Bikini was managing a large weekly dice game in the Little Italy area of Manhattan for Joe Lucchese, and had done such a good job earning money for the game that Lucchese had gifted Joe $1,000. cash (a fairly large sum for that era) as a reward for a job well done.

In approximately 1967, Brocchini went into the porno business. He knew a Jewish porno-dealer who he partnered with, and ventured into the dirty-book trade..... he hit a complete “home run”, making a huge amount of money in a very short time. By 1968, the State Investigating Commission say his three porno firms were grossing $1,500,000. a year.... Once he saw the potential, he quickly expanded his retail book stores (Blackjack Books), securing leases on some of the most desired locations along 42nd Street (the porno capital of the world), and also expanded his activities into the actual filming and production of his own films, magazines and books instead of previously just buying them wholesale for resale.

By 1971, he had became one of the largest and most important of “porno” racketeers in the New York City area.

All Five Families were active in the trade, but Brocchini was definitely one of the major players, and certainly the main Lucchese member in the pornography racket.
-
Note: [He always made a good “living”, but once he invested in the dirty-book business, his wealth soared as never before. Within two years of going into porno, he bought property and built his own mansion up in exclusive Harrison, New York (Westchester County). In 1972, it was valued in excess of $250,000.... a huge amount for that time period]
—-
Always a very aggressive guy, part of the charm of “Joe Bikini”, was that in addition to the porno business which in and of itself was very profitable, Joe would, on more than one occasion, “bust out” (bankrupt) his existing distributing company, leaving huge debts to creditors who had actually produced the dirty books and magazines that he sold in his stores, thereby reducing his overhead to zero!

One such transaction left $159,000. in unpaid debt to a book manufacturer-supplier in the wake of Brocchini shutting down one of his companies.
—-
In 1971, he was one of many arrested on obscenity charges by the NYPD Vice Squad for the operation of pornography shops and peep shows in the Times Square theatre district.
—-
In 1972, an article on the NYC pornography rackets identified Brocchini as working directly under Stefano LaSalle by that time -Underboss for Carmine Tramunti. Joe Lucchese had been demoted back to soldier and he was allegedly reporting to LaSalle.

Note: [this was after Tommy Lucchese’s death in 1967. Laratro relocated to Florida several years later, and Joe Lucchese was eventually demoted to soldier, and semi-retired]
——
Pornography related firms allegedly owned-controlled by Brocchini included:
-
Among his wholesale distribution firms were:
Cad-Publications, Inc.
Bark Books, Inc.
B. & H. Distributors, Inc.
-
Blackjack Book Stores -among the book shops and peep show locations were:
220 W. 42nd St
136 W. 42nd St
227 W. 42nd St
257 W. 42nd St
711 Seventh Ave.
——
Parliament Auto Sales, Inc., 69-11 Roosevelt Avenue, Woodside, Queens (large used-car lot)

Note: [this was his daily base of operations. Close to Corona and others areas he was active in, but only a few miles out of midtown Manhattan’s “Times Square” district where he maintained his porn businesses.
——
All was looking up for Joe Bikini. He was at the top of his game, and a well respected guy on the streets.
——
The next thing anyone hears, Joe was shot to death in his office at the Parliament used-car lot.....Nobody knew why it happened or who had done it. Only that Joe was dead.
-
This stayed a complete mystery (to both LE and the mob) for years to come. Only in later years, with certain informant testimony did a “reason” and “suspects” emerge.
-
It seems that Brocchini had had a verbal argument with the notorious Gambino member Roy DeMeo, and subsequently had a physical altercation where Brocchini punched out DeMeo, giving him a black eye among other injuries. This was enough for DeMeo to plot Joe’s murder.
-
But since Brocchini was with another crew, DeMeo had to “cop a sneak” on him (not putting it on record or seeking permission from higher ups). The killers made it look like a simple robbery gone bad. After walking into the car lot office, they pulled guns, ordering Brocchini and several workers to freeze. As they walked Brocchini to an upstairs office, they shot Joe five times in the head, killing him instantly....Then fled.
-
The year was 1976. Joseph “Joe Bikini” Brocchini was only 43 years old....... RIP “Joe Bikini”!

Note: [Sonny Scotti and the Borello brothers took over Brocchini’s operation after his death - they operated under the auspices of mob higher-ups who gave them the ok]

JOSEPH (JOE BECK) DI PALERMO - born 1907. Alias: “Joe Becky”, “Joe Palmer”. Born, raised and operated all his life from his base in the “Little Italy” section of Manhattan. (246 Elizabeth Street). He later moved to the “4th ward”, to the “Monroe Houses” (80 North Moore St).... a mob stronghold.
-
He was one of five brothers, all formally “inducted” into the Gagliano/Lucchese Family of LCN. Joe allegedly rose to “capo di decina” status by the late 1940’s, and headed the clan. His brothers operated within his crew.
-
(Joseph, Anthony, Steve, Peter and Charles - “The Beck brothers”)
————
FBI # 1519166, NYCPD # B-203135.
————
“Joe Beck” Di Palermo is arguably one of the most significant members in the history of the Lucchese Family. And considered the “dean” of dope dealers nationwide.
-
One of the most notorious of heroin merchants for over sixty years, both in the smuggling and wholesale and even retail distribution of heroin.
-
Over the years, he also dealt in large quantities of cocaine, barbiturates and any other drug he deemed worth his effort.
-
Activities: bootlegging, narcotics, counterfeiting, large-scale thefts, smuggling, extortion, strong-arm and murder..... and any other racket available.
————
Di Palermo’s “yellow jacket” is 14 pages long, and started in 1925 for:
-
1925 (state) selling narcotics
1928 possession of weapon (knife)
1937 transporting alcohol - 1 year
1938 operating illegal still - 15 months
1938 transporting untaxed alcohol
1939 possession untaxed liquor
1941 homicide by gunshot
1943 unregistered alcohol still - 2 years
1943 OPA violation - 1 yr & 1 day
1943 sale-counterfeit gas coupons
1947 internal revenue laws - 1 year
1947 alcohol tax/still parts
1950 transportation of counterfeit Amex travelers checks - 7 years
1950 transport forged securities - 6.5 years
1951 possession counterfeit money
1956 customs service - questioned and released
1958 heroin conspiracy
1958 (federal) narcotics - 15 years/$20,000 fine
1958 accessory to a felony
1958 aiding and abetting a fugitive
1958 parole violation
1960 accessory to a misdemeanor
1986 narcotics conspiracy and sale

*note: [knowing Joe Beck as I do, he most certainly had arrests between the late 1960’s-1985 period. But I could not pull them up. I’m almost positive he was arrested for drugs again late 1970’s for a Quallude conspiracy with several other mafiosi. And of course again in 1986 with brother Charlie]
————-
In all the years he was active, he was never known to have engaged, or have cared to engage, in any legitimate business!

He was strictly a “hoodlums hoodlum”..... from the womb!
-
Longtime base of operations was a candy store, and social club along Prince and Elizabeth Streets.
————
At 120 lbs., and appx 5’-5” tall, with a face and physique of a classic “nerd”, Di Palermo could easily have been mistaken for a “bookworm” or “drug store clerk”.
-
But his appearance belied his true nature.... that of an extremely vicious, cunning and voracious heroin merchant, contract killer and dedicated mafioso of the first order!
-
He dressed as a top-hoodlum also. Always completely color coordinated and jeweled up. A common outfit might be an all “electric blue” suit, tie, blue fedora, blue snakeskin shoes. With diamond watch and ring with a huge “blue” sapphire stone...... and driving a “blue” Cadillac!
-
Another day he would be dressed in all “canary yellow”, with matching ring and stone...... driving a “canary yellow” Caddy!

Note: [I kid you not!!! ..... as a young boy, I had seen him myself numerous times in the neighborhood dressed this exact way...... with a young “chippy” on his arm no less! Lol...... Joe Beck was a character indeed]
————
Associates (has known most of the important mafiosi across NYC-and the nation):
-
his brothers (Tony, Petey, Charlie).... partners
-
Vito (Don Vitone) Genovese - close friend and confidant
-
Carmine (Lilo) Galante - Bonanno underboss, top international heroin trafficker, close lifelong buddy
-
Vincenzo (Vic) Cotroni
Giuseppe (Pep) Cotroni - two of the most important Canadian based international heroin smugglers, a top supply source for DiPalermo
-
Angelo (Little Angie) Tuminaro - sometime partner of Joe Beck, top heroin smuggler of “The French Connection” infamy
-
John (Big John) Ormento - top (4-time convicted) international heroin trafficker
-
Anthony (Torty) Tortorello - a soldier in his regime.
-
Dominick (Crazy Dom) Truscello - longtime soldier in his crew
-
Vincent (Jimmy Jones) Potenza - soldier, possibly a crew member
-
Florio (Flo) Isabella - Bonanno soldier, top heroin dealer, friend of DiPalermo
-
Cosmo (Carlie) DePietro - young Genovese protege, drug distributor (later murdered)
-
Giorgio (Georgie Gillette) Gigliotti - prolific bootlegger and counterfeiter, brother in law of Joe Adonis, partner of DiPalermo
-
Ralph and Carmine Polizzano - young Genovese-DiPalermo protégés, key heroin-mixers, hid drug stash
-
Angelo (Little Moe) Presinzano - old Bonanno member, close associate
-
Alfred (Al Walker) Embarrato - old time 4th-ward hood, friend, drug dealer
-
Anthony Mirra - a young protege, drug dealer, vicious killer
-
Ralph (Raffie) Cuomo - related by marriage, highly trusted minion
-
John (Johnny Brody) Sorrentino - nephew by marriage, trusted aide
-
Salvatore (Sally Dogs) Lombardi - Genovese capo, Qualuude trafficking partner ?
————
He and his partner and buddy, Carmine Galante, were suspected in the contract killing of anti-fascist editor and writer Carlo Tresca in NYC in 1944. It was a highly publicized murder and hit the front pages of every newspaper across the world.

Di Palermo was the suspected getaway driver while Lilo was the suspected actual shooter. They were never prosecuted for this killing.
————
In 1958, he, Genovese, Ormento, and many other top mob figures went on trial, were convicted, and sentenced to lengthy prison terms for the “infamous” heroin trial of that era. “Joe Beck” received 15 years, serving it in Atlanta Federal Penitentiary with Genovese, Valachi and many others.
-
This was the precursor to Joe Valachi turning informer after he slugged the innocent inmate with the steel pipe, killing him, thinking it was Joe Di Palermo he was attacking. Of course, this series of events were monumental in the history of the American organized underworld.
-
The “Honored Society” would never be the same!.... and would never fully recover to its “glory days” of the post WWII era through the 1950’s, arguably the greatest period of stability and financial strength ever enjoyed by Cosa Nostra in this country!
————
Joseph “Joe Beck” Di Palermo - was without doubt, the most conscientious of drug kingpins ever to walk the streets of New York City.
He operated at the highest levels of the mob, both domestically and internationally, continuously for over six decades! ...... only prison walls would occasionally interrupt his devilish heroin dealings!

Even at eighty years of age he was still “at it”..... smuggling, mixing, diluting, packaging and selling his “powdered death in a bag” through his many minions to unfortunate souls all over this city and beyond!..... until his dying day!
———-
“Joe Beck” died at the age of 85 in 1992.

New York’s “Little Italy” and the Lucchese Family will never be the same.
-

Re: Maxie's Lucchese Profiles

Joe Beck did not get big in drugs till after he got out of Atlanta. The first series of deals of any good size were the ones that put him away in the 1950's. He was so well known after that it made a lot of guys want to be in business with him. The tax and alcohol busts are strange, they were because he kept his own stills in basements to make his own booze, years after the end of prohibition. His brother Charlie became bigger than him in the 1970's money wise.

Anyone know of a Petey Black who was supposedly a Lucchese captain in the 1970's and 1980's in the Morris Park area? I would guess he was born around the 1910-1920 era. I don't have a last name for him.
