Re: The future of LCN
I completely understand where you are coming from but Boston is a bit different because the total numbers represent "mostly" the suburbs and not the "city limits." Yes, Boston had an area that was dominated by Italians (North End/Medford) but the total numbers are indicative of the suburbs going as far as 60 miles outside the city. The city of Boston is actually pretty small when compared to most major cities, most people do not realize that.scagghiuni wrote: ↑Thu Aug 01, 2019 8:17 amnot so extremely small, people of Italian descent formed the second largest ancestry group in boston, making up 8% of the population after irish americans who made up 15%, it's the same percentage of brooklyn or queens

You can see the figures for Italian populatioms in specific cities below. New York (at #1) obviously includes the extended metro area (as the site notes). Add in parts of Connecticut and it's over 2 million.

That Chart is 30 years old , Alot has changed over those 3 decades . I know NYC is still #1 those figures have to be down dramatically from close to 2 million in the 5 boroughs. Is that for the 5 boroughs or all of the state including LI , Nassau and Suffolk countiesWiseguy wrote: ↑Thu Aug 01, 2019 9:08 am You can see the figures for Italian populatioms in specific cities below. Re: The future of LCN
You're right, should have caught that. Wonder what the 2010 census said? Obviously we have another one coming up. I did read an article from not long ago that said there are only 50,000 Italians in New York City (The 5 boroughs, I assume).Bklyn21 wrote: ↑Thu Aug 01, 2019 9:24 amThat Chart is 30 years old , Alot has changed over those 3 decades . Anyway, the numbers listed for New York I assumed included the extended metro area, i.e 5 boroughs, Long Island, Westchester/North Suburbs, North Jersey, etc
All roads lead to New York.
Re: The future of LCN
In addition to the article I read that cited 50,000 for NYC, I did some quick searching -
Those of Italian ancestry in Nassau, for example, constituted 20.1 percent of the county’s population in 2012-16, down from 22.7 percent in the earlier five years; while in Suffolk, those of Italian descent were 25.5 percent of the population in 2012-16, down from 28.4 percent.

New Jersey has more than 1.45 million residents of Italian ancestry, according to U.S. Census data.

At least 37% of Westchester county residents are of Italian descent.

Re: The future of LCN
The Italians in Westchester are upper middle class and would not get involved in mob activities. I bet more prosecutors grew up there than wise guys. Same for most of Long Island.
There were tons of Italians in California in the 1920's, but the mob families were way smaller and did not last as long because the Italians had job opportunities after arriving, unlike in New York and Jersey.

Re: The future of LCN
That's a bit of a generalization. The mob has long had a significant presence in Westchester.
All roads lead to New York.
Re: The future of LCN
They were not as concentrated in ethnic ghettos either.

Yes, in middle and lower middle areas in Westchester as well---Ossining, Croton, Tarrytown,White Plains, Pelham, Mount Vernon, Elmsford. Strong interests in construction unions there as well traditionally.
Re: The future of LCN
As well, of course, as wiseguys who hit the suburbs.

Long Island itself is a hotbed of LCN activity. The Lucchese family alone has 2 full crews there (out of their 7). All 5 families had crews operating there.

It's a new morning in America... fresh, vital. The old cynicism is gone. We have faith in our leaders. We're optimistic as to what becomes of it all. It really boils down to our ability to accept. We don't need pessimism. There are no limits.
Re: The future of LCN
What is the age of the made guys in Westchester active in that county who grew up there? I would think most are older and from the Bronx.
