The Cuocolo trial,the first maxi trial against the organized crime was held between 1911 and 1912 in Viterbo for "legitimate suspicion" because in Naples the defendants had already tried to bribe the jury.
The story began on the morning of June 6,1906, (6,6,06) when the corpse riddled with stabs of Gennaro Cuocolo, a forty-five year old Camorra basist and expert in theft, was discovered on the beach called Cupa Calastro near Torre del Greco. On the same day the corpse of his wife, Maria Cutinelli - an accomplice of her husband and former prostitute - who was stabbed to death in the house that the couple occupied in Naples, at No. 25 of the Nardones street, was also found.The police investigated the crime that went undolved.
Subsequently the investigation is taken up by the Royal Carabinieri, with an intervention that, according to some historians, was wanted by the same House of Savoy, which had been solicited by the king's cousin, Emanuele Filiberto of Savoy, who at that time resided in the royal palace of Capodimonte and was made aware of the growing concern about the spread of crime in Naples.

This atmosphere of "crusade" towards the Camorra also led to the replacement of the public prosecutor who was initially entrusted with the investigation, Nicola Gargia, considered too respectful of procedural guarantees, with another, Alfredo de Tilla, considered more malleable. Later, another investigating magistrate, Leopoldo Lucchesì Palli, who had expressed doubts about the investigation was forced to step aside, and was replaced by Michele Ciancaglini. Basically "the crime Cuocolo opposed Questura and Carabinieri and devastated the Neapolitan magistracy". The main basis of the investigation was the revelations of Gennaro Abbatemaggio aka the coachman, a convict who was 23 years old at the time of the facts, to whom other "repentant" men followed.
The trial took place in Viterbo only in 1911, a full 5 years after the crime. Lazio The city was identified as the site of the trial, because it was thought that in Naples there would be too many constraints.
The newspapers followed the story a lot and even for the first time in Italy a trial was filmed and copies of the silent film of the trial were distributed in the few cinemas then existing.

There were 41 accused, one died before trial, two during the trial, three were fugitives.

The final sentence awarded a total of 355 years and 17
months of imprisonment. It was read at 10.10 pm on 9 July

Mental health experts questioned the miniscule likelihood of a father and son committing a planned double suicide. I've read the rape story for years, can't recall all the different places it appears and what the original source is, so I'm not discounting it, only saying that I've seen close sources describe it as an affair. Bompensiero himself got involved with Adamo's ex-wife. Doesn't change the fact that Adamo shot her and killed himself, only curious about the truth of the rape/affair.

Magaddino and two Bonanno members were taped discussing a "Marco Angelo" (ph), presumed to be a Bonanno member who previously killed himself. Magaddino suggested that Joe Bonanno murdered the man and staged it as a suicide, but one of the Bonanno members at the meeting (likely Paul Sciacca) insists it was a suicide because he had been on the phone with "Marco Angelo" immediately before he killed himself. This might be Michael Angelino, who shows up on lists as a Bonanno member that died in 1963, which would fit the timeline.

Ok so here's something interesting. There are ties between the suicides of Steve Raffa, Giovanni and Pietro Ligamarri, and NJ Genovese associate George Weingartner (committed suicide on 7/6/98).

Steve Raffa (Sicilian born) knew both Giovanni and PIetro Ligamarri, and was peripheral to people involved in the Pizza Connection case.
Tampa boss VIncent LoScalzo, who was close with Raffa, attended Pietro Ligamarri's wedding
Steve Raffa inducted John Mamone into the Trafficante family in the mid 90s- Mamone relocated to South Florida

1956 June 18, 1956 - Girolamo (Momo) Adamo – The longtime underboss of the L.A. mafia, Adamo shot his wife and then himself on June 18, 1956, after he was passed over for the syndicate’s boss’ chair following California don Jack Dragna dying of a heart attack and allegedly was forced to watch Frank DeSimone, the man who would go on to replace Dragna as the city’s Godfather, rape his wife in front of him.

July 30, 1981 Carlo Licata – The son of L.A. mob boss Nick Licata and son-in-law of Detroit mob don William (Black Bill) Tocco, Licata was discovered dead inside his Michigan home, shot twice in the chest on July 30, 1981, the six-year anniversary of the Jimmy Hoffa disappearance and murder. Licata’s house, located in the posh Metro Detroit suburb of Bloomfield Hills, is suspected by the FBI as a possible location that Hoffa was taken to and executed – he was last seen in a restaurant parking lot less than five minutes away. Investigators raised their eyebrows at the fact that the gun he used was found more than 10 feet away from the body, resting neatly on a dresser, and the suspicious date it occurred on. Licata was having business problems and was reportedly on the outs with his brother-in-laws, then-Detroit mob don, Giacomo (Black Jack) Tocco and Motor City caporegime Anthony (Tony T) Tocco, at the time of his death.

1st or November 23, 1981 - Salvatore Serra aka bullet, boss of Pagani and enemy of Cutolo, hanged himself in the prison of ascoli piceno because he knew that once arrived in that prison ruled by the NCO of Cutolo that would be his end and Pasquale Barra, the prison executioner, reported in a deposition:

May 2, 1989 - Gerald Scarpelli was a hitman for the Chicago Outfit criminal organization who later became a government witness.On July 31, 1988, Scarpelli was arrested by federal agents for a robbery in Michigan City, Indiana. After being confronted with wiretap conversations from James "Duke" Basile, a Scapelli crew member, discussing assassination methods, Scarpelli agreed to become an informant. Scarpelli eventually admitted his involvement in the 1980 Dauber murders as well as the murders of mob chauffeur Gerald Carusiello and chop shop owner Timothy O'Brien.
On May 2, 1989, two days before a court ruling on his robbery charges, Gerald Scarpelli died after hanging himself in a shower stall at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Chicago. Scarpelli allegedly killed himself because a judge had recently ruled against him regarding the Basile tapes.

May 21, 1999 - Giovanni & Pietro Ligammari – The Bonanno drug lieutenant and his son were found hanging side-by-side inside their New Jersey home on May 21, 1999. Giovanni, 60, was convicted in the legendary Pizza Connection Case. Pietro, 37, was a civilian without a criminal record. Mental health experts questioned the miniscule likelihood of a father and son committing a planned double suicide. The elder Ligammari was just one of a string of untimely demises of mobsters tied to the fallout from Pizza Connection bust, most of them connected to the treacherous Bonanno Family.

November 16, 2000 - Steven Raffa – The Tampa mafia’s capo in Miami, overseeing South Florida for all of the 1980s and 1990s on behalf of the Trafficante Family, Raffa hung himself inside his Pembrooke Pines home on November 16, 2000, less than a month removed from being pinched in a large-scale racketeering indictment. Raffa was reportedly severely depressed in the wake of his arrest, however, there are family members of his that remain weary of a firm designation of suicide regarding his death.
