GAETANO (TODDO) MARINO - Genovese powerhouse

Post by maxiestern11 »

GAETANO (TODDO) MARINO - aka Salvatore Maiorana (true name), Toddo Marino, Thomas Marino, Toto Marino. Born 1898 - Milazzo, Sicily. FBI #1644357, NYPD #B-45651. Record commences 1913 for juvenile delinquency, assault, robbery, burglary, INS violation (immigration laws). An original and “key” member of the Genovese Family, operating primarily in Brooklyn (Downtown Brooklyn, Williamsburg, Red Hook, Fort Greene, Bay Ridge, etc). Controlled large swaths of territory for the family. Arguably one of several top figures in control of that area.
Capo Di Decina of one of the largest regimes for many decades. Future top figures in the family started out under his supervision, including; Joseph (Joe Shep) Schipani - his right-hand man, Ottaviano (Tommy) Lombardi, Joseph (Joe Tobin) Scarpinato, Thomas (Crazy Tommy) Contaldo and many others. On par with such mob luminaries as Vito Genovese, Lucky Luciano, Joseph (Joe Adonis) Doto as his contemporaries. His base of operations for many years was the Dixie Tavern, where he would hold court. In control of many varied labor unions in the construction field and the Brooklyn waterfront. Activities included: gambling, shylock, labor racketeering on a large scale, both narcotics smuggling and distribution, and virtually all illegal activity controlled by his regime. Not known to have served any significant jail time if any at all. Despite his influence, managed to keep a relatively low profile all his life. And very few were in his confidence...... no known dod is available, but believed to have died by the mid-late 1970’s.

Nice write up! He died in 1979. His HQ was located at 669 5th avenue in Brooklyn. He was heavily involved with vending machines. In 1953 he was arrested on a deportation warrant, but in 1956 the warrant was declared null and void. Most likely he was succeeded by Contaldo.
