I didn't provide updates after I made the post above last November.

Long story short: Today, Giuseppe De Vito's wife was found guilty of second-degree murder of their two young daughters.

Unbelievable how this trial is going on for ten years.

Was she incarcerated all this time? Every day served pre-trial counts as 1.5 doesn't it? That would mean she will be free immediately. 14 years is way too soft for a crime such as this.

Lupara,

De Vito's wife was questioned by police on April 1, 2009, the day after their two daughters were found dead.

There was a previous trial in which the jury found her guilty of first-degree murder. The conviction was appealed, and it was overturned in 2013 -- she has been free on bail ever since the conviction was overturned.

Before the jury in this second trial was sequestered for deliberations regarding a verdict, the jurors were unaware -- and remained unaware -- of the previous conviction and it having been overturned on appeal in 2013.

The judge in this second trial will determine the sentence. The Crown is seeking 14 years before Sorella is eligible for parole; the defence lawyer is seeking the minimum 10 years. The Crown could have sought the maximum sentence of 25 years but chose not to.

I will have to look up where Sorella was detained after she was arrested -- hospital? -- and whether the period of detention counts for credit toward the upcoming sentence.

This guy got quite the stint for defending himself as opposed to those who are convicted for actually commiting murder.

I've got a question I'm hoping one of you guys can shed some light on, do we know why Joe LoPresti was murdered back in 1992? Was this the hit Sciascia was defending to Sal Vitale?

I'll answer your question in the thread where Lo Presti's murder has been discussed most: "Daniel Renaud's 2018 book on Vito Rizzuto." My answer will quote earlier posts and will include an excerpt or two from the aforementioned book, along with a Google Translate translation.

thank you AM, not sure how i missed this thread. Its turning my understanding of Montreal on its head. It looks as a though Humphreys and Lamothe's book was wrong about a lot.
