The total is way too high for his estimates but it at least tells us who may have had some of the bigger crews.

Santantonio in his 1963 report says that Joseph Zingaro took over when Vincent Squillante disappeared. Interestingly, Santantonio said that Zingaro was probably involved in the hit, and that Squillante was whacked because he was 'running around with the wife' of [redacted; unfortunately].

This makes a lot of sense actually. The other guys who took over some of Squillante's stuff were Anthony 'Tony The Geep' Sedotto (1913 - 1977) and Rocco Mazzie (1916 - 1986). By the late 70s - early 1980s the guys in the Sedotto and Mazzie crews were both back under Zingaro.

Squillante and Zingaro were involved in a fruit company together along with a MARIO PICCININNI.

Wasn’t Squillante killed by Nino Gaggi as revenge for the Scalice murders?

In the file itself the Zingaro name is not present, but rather a "Joe B-------" - 20 men.

However Santantonio notes that Joe B had a produce place in the Bronx Terminal Market, and that he hung around with an undertaker. Does anyone have any clue who this undertaker may be? Perhaps Edward 'Eddie Guido' Quirolo?

HK said that the FBI doesn't have files on Zingaro so the Joe B could be explained by that.

I don't know much about Gaggi. Squillante was whacked three years after the Scalisi brothers got killed, seems odd to wait that long.

Looking up the Sedottos, Michael was born to Antonio Sedotto and Filomena Squillante of Salerno. Filomena is the daughter of a Nunzio Squillante and a Mary Rega. This Nunzio was born in 1851 hence too old to be the same Gambino member who shares his name, but both came from Salerno so likely a relation.

Anyways, there was a Gerardo "Jerry" Rega born in 1918 to Ettore Rega and Rosina Niosi (da Napoli) who was murdered in 1954. Could this be a match?

It could definitely be a match. This murdered individual was based in Bath Beach section of Brooklyn.

Could be. Was this guy living on Lower East Side?

You are doing a great job Chris! I tip my hat.
As of January 1963 James Jimmy Lefty Surrusco lived in Woodside, Queens.

If he was a member in 1970 when he came out of prison, he should have been a member in the 1960s.

I haven’t seen him on a membership list. However, Henry Hill explicitly says Batts was a made man in the Gambino family on pages 115 & 117 of Wiseguy.
Not sure, but there seems to be a lot of misinfo about him out there. Given that he is such a well-known figure because of Goodfellas, I’m surprised that there are so many erroneous bios of him out there.

While a number of internet sources have him as born in 1921, he was born William Joseph Bentvena on February 22nd, 1933 in Manhattan to Joseph Bentivegna and Alice Fulham. Joseph Bentivegna was born in 1910 in NYC to Lorenzo Bentivegna and Accursia “Gussie” Scaduto, both of Sciacca, Agrigento. Alice Fulham was born in 1909 in Dublin; Joseph and Alice married in NYC in 1930, and their first born son, Laurence Bentvena, was born in 1932 (he died in 2020).

Alice took her kids on a trip with her back to Ireland. Here’s the manifest for their return to the US in 1935, with little Billy in tow:

Image

In 1940, the family lived at 72-22 Burchell Ave in Arverne, QU (on the Rockaway peninsula); Joseph worked as a driver for a newspaper company and died in 1983, while Alice died in 2005.

Joseph and Alice:

I believe that Lorenzo Bentivegna was a cousin of Antonino “William A” Bentivegna/Bentvena, a Brooklyn undertaker and politician born in 1889 to parents from Sciacca:

In 1958, Billy Bentvena married Patricia McGovern. The photo below has circulated online with the claim that it is Billy. The parents on the left are definitely Joseph and Alice Bentivegna, but I’m not sure if the groom is Billy or his brother Laurence (who married a woman named Corrine Manzutto in 1953; the bride to me looks more like a Manzutto than a McGovern), or if, instead, the bride was one of their younger sisters, Maureen and Veronica.

JD has him listed as a soldier on his list of deceased Gambino members and he is extremely careful about those things, listing people as "suspected" or "possible" unless it comes from a reliable source. He must have found something that gave him confidence in Bentvena being a member.

Nice job PolackTony!
I believe Bentvena's brother in-law (Mcgovern) was arrested alongside him for transporting/distributing junk and was later killed in Mexico.

Yeah, I noted that JD had him listed as a member as well. I myself have no idea what evidence exists to support his membership apart from Henry Hill’s assertion, but that fact that JD had him as such makes me think there is another, presumably member, source for it. We know that others managed to get made in NYC, prior to the 1970s, despite having a non-Italian mother, so if Bentvena was made, he wouldn’t have been the first. His Sciaccatanu ancestry could also be significant, though I have no evidence that his father’s family were themselves involved in the mafia.
