LaPietra was the capo of the crew. In formal mafia terms, he was capo of the Chinatown decina. “Crew boss” was just way to refer to a soldier that had a subcrew of guys answering to him. So far as we know the term “crew boss” didn’t refer to a formal mafia rank but was just a way of designating a soldier with more clout or status (like calling someone a “lieutenant” to a capo) who had a group of guys working under him. Frank Calabrese ran a major juice loan operation, and Nick basically worked for him on that.
