I remember the day it happened....I was a kid living on Belmont Avenue.
He was actually in the midst of a comeback as a half-assed heavyweight and doing pretty well. He had gone into B & G clothing store right on 187th street off of Arthur Avenue when a couple of guys came in and opened up on him, one with a handgun and another with a shotgun. They did a number on him, but they couldn't kill him.
Seemed like he never really fully recovered. Don't get me wrong, he remained a tough motherfucker. Worked as a bouncer for Steve at Hawaii Sea on Williamsbridge Road for a VERY unruly crowd during the 80s and managed to keep relative order.
Back to the original question....to my knowledge there was no connection between Crea and Genovese. If there was at all, it was one of those very distant or through marriage things that maybe the press tried to grab hold of and sensationalize.
