Any truth to this? or is it a misconception.

Re: Steve Crea related by marriage to Vito Genovese?
is that Bobby Halpern the boxer from the Bronx? Wonder if he is still alive. That guy did allot of prison time like a 20yr stretch and had a boxing come back in his 40s in the late 70s when he got out of prison. I remember that well. He was ambushed and shot bad in the hand by two guys with shotguns as he walked out of a Bronx clothing store. It ended his boxing career. His wife was later charged with hiring those men to kill him. you cant blame her. Bobby had a history of beating her badly. Knocked her teeth out and broke her leg on one occasion.

It's Halpern the boxer. If remember right Steve Crea was a boxer at one time so maybe they had a friendship through boxing. Halpern died last year.Rocco wrote:is that Bobby Halpern the boxer from the Bronx? Wonder if he is still alive. Re: Steve Crea related by marriage to Vito Genovese?
So she couldn't file for divorce and/or leave his sorry ass? So instead of leaving her, she decided to hire someone to kill him? Sounds like she just used it as an excuse to me.Rocco wrote:you cant blame her. Bobby had a history of beating her badly. Knocked her teeth out and broke her leg on one occasion.
If he was THAT bad to her, she could have easily stabbed or shot the prick and killed him and got off on a self defense charge. Instead she probably got a murder conspiracy charge. Not too bright.
If I didn't have my case coming up, I would like to come back with you gentlemen when this is over with and really lay the law down what is going on in this country.....
Re: Steve Crea related by marriage to Vito Genovese?
I remember the day it happened....I was a kid living on Belmont Avenue.
He was actually in the midst of a comeback as a half-assed heavyweight and doing pretty well. He had gone into B & G clothing store right on 187th street off of Arthur Avenue when a couple of guys came in and opened up on him, one with a handgun and another with a shotgun. They did a number on him, but they couldn't kill him.
Seemed like he never really fully recovered. Don't get me wrong, he remained a tough motherfucker. Worked as a bouncer for Steve at Hawaii Sea on Williamsbridge Road for a VERY unruly crowd during the 80s and managed to keep relative order.
Back to the original question....to my knowledge there was no connection between Crea and Genovese. If there was at all, it was one of those very distant or through marriage things that maybe the press tried to grab hold of and sensationalize.
