That’s the one, Slim. I think it’s thought that, following the arrests and defections of the early-to-mid-2000s, there has only been one Bronx crew in the Bonanno family although they seem to have been swelling their numbers by inducting a whole lot of younger guys in the past decade or so.
The bronx crew could’ve been the ones that whacked seccafico. I remember reading somewhere that seccafico recognized the gunman and tried to make a run for it right before he got shot. Whoever killed seccafico not only prob knew him, but also planned out the hit very well. The hit happened early morning with no witnesses and seccafico was dead when the cops arrived. Good at aiming a gun unlike the guy who shot Sal Zottola.
The Bronx crew are the main suspects in the Seccafico hit, naturally.
As for Zottola, my opinion is, as I’ve said before, it was not a mob hit on account of the black gunman OR whoever ordered it didn’t want it to look like a mob hit.
The Bronx crew is not short of young, capable shooters, presumably like the guys who got Seccafico. Not to mention there are probably Italian kids lining up to whack somebody in an attempt to get made so hiring a sloppy, jittery black shooter just seems strange to me.
Also, I believe that if Zottola really thought the mob was after him, he would have flipped. The fact that he’s refused to cooperate with investigators implies that he’s not overly worried about the threat of his life.
Its not completely ruled out that the zottola shooting was a mob hit. The mob doesn’t just hire italians to do hits. Joe watts was german and he was a top shooter for gotti and terrence caldwell was black and he was hired multiple times to whack guys for the lucheses. Im convinced the zottola shooting is a mob hit but thats just me
Fair point Slim but Caldwell was not hired "multiple times to whack guys for the lucheses." He was hired once, to murder Michael Meldish. His previous hit was the attempted murder of Bonanno soldier Enzo Stagno, in which he was hired by Meldish who didn't have the permission of the Lucchese hierarchy which is the primary reason for Meldish's murder.
