If Barney and chin were under so much surveillance when he was being groomed to takeover when did they actually have time to get to know each other .... do we have evidence or proof Barney ever even met chin gigante. Sorry if it's a stupid question
Understand where you're coming from . It's more likely he was "groomed" by Santora and the other East Harlem people he grew up around, but it's safe to assume that him and Chin have definitely met, multiple times. Even if other people closer to Chin put into his ear that Barney should be taking on more responsibility, etc. - I'm sure Chin would have to be acquainted with the guy before agreeing to something like that.

Let me rephrase this before all my haters jump down my throat. We know from cafaro sr, saverio santaro made sure fat tony looked after Barney when his pops passed. It's just all articles from 90s use words like " chin groomed him" and " handpicked successor" I'm pretty sure the Mikey dimino surveillance picis all we saw of Barney surveillance back then. Please correct. Me if I'm wrong. And trust me I know he's the man I'm not downplaying his power just curious

Is it just me or was that really weird that he wrote an open letter to the mob lol

I believe Gigante was going to hit him because they had heard that Gangi was going call a Genovese soldier as a witness in his wall street case. Joseph Zito investigated it and reported back that it wasn't true so it was called off.

Gangi went to prison in the late 1990s and was replaced as official captain by Peter DiChiara

This is one of the odder little details that emerged from this story. A capo pulling bank heists?

Cheech wrote: Sat Sep 02, 2023 5:25 am Did it ever come out why Polito came in blasting?
Like D'Urso, Polito was an associate in Ross Gangi's crew but he wanted to be transferred to Allie Shades' crew so he could hook up with bank robbers there. Polito was a degenerate gambler and wanted to rob banks to raise cash to pay off his debts, but the Gangi crew was less eager to go out on robberies (even though Gangi himself participated in a robbery with Polito). Joe Zito refused to release Polito to Allie Shades' crew because Polito owed tens of thousands of dollars to D'Urso's cousin and he didn't want to let him go until he repaid the debt. So Polito figured if he killed D'Urso and his cousin on the sneak he could get out of paying the debt and be released to Allie Shades (where he'd also be more likely to get straightened out if they knew he was capable).

IIRC, D'Urso had also set Polito up in a robbery some time previously and Polito had been shot in the leg as a result.
