Hired_Goonz wrote: Sat Nov 18, 2023 9:29 am I just finished this book. It was ok but not great. Maybe a better writer could have gotten more out of D'Elia or maybe not.

- Most interesting stuff is about Bufalino, most of the book is about him in fact. D'Elia says that the Hoffa murder was instigated by Provenzano and Salerno but they needed Bufalino's blessing to do it. Says that Bufalino repeatedly tried to talk Hoffa out of attempting to regain the Teamsters presidency. Says that Sheeran is full of crap and wasn't the shooter. In fact he says that Bufalino and "the two Tonys" called Sheeran to a meeting shortly after the murder to make sure he wouldn't try to seek revenge.

- says he was at the Copa the night of Joey Gallo's murder, said that he did witness Gallo disrespect Bufalini and then leave the club and they got word he was murdered at Umberto's half an hour later. Says Sheeran wasn't there and again is full of shit on that point. Bufalino never discussed Gallo's murder with him.

- he gets into some Forest Gump of the mob type of stuff at one point. Claims that he was supposed to hang out with Eddie Lino the night he was killed but it was election night so Eddie told him to come down the next night instead. "I was supposed to be in the car with him" yea ok Billy I don't know about this one. Wasn't there some report that Lino was on his way to a making ceremony that night? Or I might be mixing it up with something else.

- has a bizarre story about sending Joey Naples of Youngstown some jewelry worth over $400k for him to sell on D'elia's behalf, but Naples got murdered literally the next day and he never ended up getting his jewelry back. Says he went to Naples' wake to see if anyone was wearing it? It was a weird story.

- talks about doing deals with Trump in the 80s and seems to admire him as a ruthless businessman. "Yea, that's Roy Cohn's boy"

- confirms the old report about Stanfa asking him to head the Philly family when Stanfa would get pinched. Turned it down because he knew it wouldn't be accepted by Merlino and Natale. Talks about doing business with those two even after the FBI warned him they had Natale on tape talking about killing him.

- I didn't realize how involved D'Elia was in the entertainment business. He talks about being part of Michael Jackson's management team (his opinion is that MJ was definitely not a pedo), settling disputes for Fabio and even says he got a record deal for the rapper Kurupt.

- weirdest part of the book is the end where he talks about being in prison and getting tons of respect from Aryan Brotherhood guys and the Mexicans and even says that a Mongol biker he was friends with wanted to put a hit on DeNaples for saying that D'Elia was an FBI informant. Keep in mind that D'Elia had a reduced sentence for testifying against DeNaples. Whether or not he was a longtime informant, he still would be despised by hardcore convicts for testifying. I can't rule out the possibility of him being an informant because he never so much as got arrested until he had been in the life for like 40 years. Very suspect imo.

Overall an ok book with good stories about infamous mobsters but didn't really give much insight into the workings of the Bufalino family itself.
Strange he says Trump's is 'Cohn's boy.' Cohn was gay and died of AIDS
It's no secret that Trump was a protege of Cohn and learned a lot from him. D'Elia in the book claims to have used Cohn for Bufalino's appeal - he said that another lawyer actually did the work but Cohn was paid to put his name on it - and says that one time he went to Roy's house and there were a bunch of half-naked muscular men around. I brought the book back to the library at this point so can't remember the specifics but he described it like a scene out of some decadent Roman orgy or something.

Whitney Webb's incredible 2 volume book "One Nation Under Blackmail" details Cohn's longtime involvement in high-level sexual blackmail a la Epstein, Craig Spence, Lawrence King etc. I wonder if he got any dirt on his protege Donnie like Epstein almost certainly did.
I always thought the mob was probably blackmailing Cohn who frequented a lot of their seedier places in NYC . I wish they would release the files on the Epstein death - Donnie definitely took that guy out to bury all those fucked up secrets. I just wonder how many other Epstein clients helped cover/finance it - wouldn't doubt if Hillary and Trump teamed up on that one.

D'Elia was Bufalinos lackey. I do not think it went down how D'Elia says. Instead of D'Elia being an "insider" he actually was in the dark about everything. So, he thought he was Bufalinos compare... Was Osticco around still at this time? There is no way he had more claim then him if he was.

He let it flame out. The biggest issue with this book in my opinion is he didn't explain his thought process as to why he let the Family die out and not induct new people. It wasn't for a lack of associates, he had a 100 and some were Italian. He even said he had a "street boss", but he wasn't inducted either.
It has been said that Pittsburgh was not allowed by the commission (Genovese really) to make new members. I always found that a little weird, but does D'elia mention anything about that kind of prohibition?
Nope, I believe the only time he mentioned the commission was when he said Russell Bufalino was “above the commission”
I think what he means by this is when the commission had meetings, Russell Bufalino, was used as someone they went to advice for. Above the commission makes no sense. Most experienced members on here never heard that before so I believe it's an exaggeration and an ego thing with Delia.
No I think he literally felt Bufalino was above the commission. Some mobsters like Mikey Scars are historians, D’Elia is whatever the opposite of that is. D’Elia seems to not even know how the commission functioned. Overall, D’Elia was very honest (from what I can tell) but he just didn’t know a lot of history.
If he was honest he would admit he was a rat. He even testified against a civilian, Louis DeNaples. In some ways its worse. Maybe it was in the book. I didnt read it

No nothing of that sort. He mentioned he stopped going to New York after John Gotti got locked up and was loosing touch with those Families. It's frustrating he never elaborated as to why he didn't want to induct new people even though there were plenty of associates.

I never read that he doesn't think he's a rat. Now that I read this stuff, he's not only a rat but broke omerta as well.

Maybe D'Elia did both.
He literally wrote a book about his life in the mafia, yes he divulged “secrets” about the mafia. He didn’t give too much new info, but him recognizing Bufalino as boss or Stefano LaTorre as a member is giving away information about the life.
Gotcha. I just asked the question. I didn't read the book. Thanks
